Chapter 124
Avi had to physically pull Mitch away from Scott, but after further consideration, he decided he would just stay with Alex rather than making Scott do it. Before Avi came to this conclusion, he reached past Scott to grab Mitch's arm, but stopped when Scott flinched away from him. He tilted his head a little. "What's wrong with you?" "What?" Avi moved forward again to prove a point, and nodded when Scott flinched away again. "That. Why are you doing that? Like.. As if you're scared of me." "Well... You did kiss me." Scott reminded him. "Okay, that was an accident, and I can assure you it will never happen again." Scott just shook his head. "Okay. Sorry..." "Just.. Take Mitchell out there, okay? And if something happens, when Kevin tells you to, bring him back in here and I'll trade you spots, alright?" Scott nodded, turning to grab Mitch's hand carefully, and then led him out of their office.
Avi turned to Alex, who was sitting on top of the desk with a handful of crackers in his hand, but Alex froze mid-chew when Avi raised an eyebrow at him. Alex quickly hopped down from the desk and tossed the rest of his food into the garbage can beside the desk. "I'm sorry, Sir. I didn't mean to sit on your desk and compromise your workspace." "No, it's... It's not that, Alexander. You didn't have to throw your snack away." He shook his head. Avi walked around the desk and sat down, going through the papers that Scott left on it, because he was curious about Scott's work. Alex just stood beside the desk awkwardly, looking down at his hands. Avi finally looked up at him, after rummaging through a few papers. "Alexander?" "Yes, Sir?" He responded instantly. "Would you like to sit down?" "No, thank you, Alpha." "Do you need something to do, or...? Why are you standing there like that?" "I-I just.. You didn't give me an order. And I didn't want to miss it if you decided to give me one." Avi tilted his head a little at him. "Okay then I guess I order you to stop staring at me like that. Relax. Sit down. You can eat as many crackers as you want, I don't care. I don't know where Scott's hiding them, but please help yourself." Meanwhile, Scott was now stood beside Mitch at the front door of the Counsel, the army rushing around in the other room trying to get themselves organized, with the Betas and Kirstie passing out any kind of weaponry Albert could find just in case. Mitch would often squeeze Scott's hand, just because he was nervous, but each time Scott would assume that meant Mitch sensed something horrible and his heart would spike, until Mitch smiled at him. Scott kept his eyes trained on Mitch's facial expressions just in case. "Anything?" "Not yet. You'd know." "I would?" Mitch giggled a little. "Of course you would." Scott grinned, and then set one hand on the side of Mitch's neck, just to pull him a little closer to kiss Mitch's temple. "You're so brave. I'm so, so proud of you. And... You know that if this goes south, and I have to fight... If something happens..." Mitch's smile dropped immediately and he pushed Scott away. "Don't say things like that. You're going to be fine." "I know. But... Just in case..." "No. There's no just in case. You're going to come back to me and tell me afterwards." "But, Mitchie--" "Wait, wait..." Mitch held up a finger, and his head turned toward the door. "Uh oh." Scott didn't even hesitate, as he peeked out the small window beside the door and saw very small, very faint people heading toward them in a large group. "'Uh oh' is right." He grabbed Mitch's wrist in an instant, and pulled him toward the group of trained Alphas that was gathered in the other room, meeting Kevin's eyes as soon as he could. "Now. Right now." Kevin nodded once, whispering something to the Commander who immediately began ordering the army around, and then Kevin turned back to him. "How many?" "Less than this." He gestured to the group of Alphas before him. Kevin nodded once. "Good. Alright, I'm going to go with Kirstie. Get Avi out here as quick as possible." Scott nodded right back, grabbing Mitch's arm again. "Yes, Sir." He hurried down the hallway to cross the front doors to head back to his office. Halfway there, Mitch whimpered and pulled back a little. "Alpha, please."
