Chapter 3 The Unbelievable Truth
Unexpectedly, Evelyn was kicked to the ground by William. Instinctively, she tried to protect her stomach, but before she could explain herself, William slapped her hard across the head.
"You bitch! How could Bianca try to kill herself because of someone like you? You’re the one who deserves to die!" William's voice was filled with hatred, his disgust for Evelyn reaching its peak.
"Dad, let it be. It's just that Adrian and I aren’t meant to be. I don’t blame Evelyn." Bianca's voice came through the ward, tinged with tears.
Blood seeped from the corner of Evelyn's mouth, and her head throbbed with pain. She tried to lift her gaze and saw Bianca leaning against Adrian's chest, her eyes red from crying.
Adrian held her gently, his usually strong features softened with endless tenderness as he comforted Bianca.
The scene was warm, yet it pierced Evelyn's heart.
If not for that incident, Bianca would have been Adrian's wife now, not her—an abandoned, unwelcome child living under someone else’s roof.
Although the events between her and Adrian weren’t her doing, in that moment, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt.
"Bianca, you’re still defending this bitch at a time like this? If it weren’t for her scheming, you’d be the young mistress of the Pierce Family now! You wouldn’t have tried to kill yourself over losing Adrian. And yet you’re still speaking up for her. You’re too kind-hearted!" William's frustration for his daughter was palpable.
"Dad, please stop." Bianca sighed, her hurt gaze turned toward Evelyn. "Evelyn, if you like Adrian, you can tell me. I won’t fight you for him. But why did you have to go this far to get him? I’m so disappointed in you."
"Bianca, this isn’t me…" Evelyn began, but she was interrupted.
"You still dare to say it's not you!" William's fury ignited. "You’re still denying it, aren’t you? Alright, then! I’ll beat you to death!" He shouted as he swung a chair at Evelyn.
Evelyn instinctively curled her body, shielding her stomach with her arms.
"Still not leaving? Do you want to be beaten to death here?" Adrian's cold voice cut through the tension.
William froze in his tracks, holding the chair.
Evelyn trembled, her body shaking as she climbed to her feet.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Adrian tenderly holding Bianca, and a sharp pain gripped her chest.
For the sake of the baby, Evelyn had no choice but to leave.
With all eyes on her, whispering and pointing fingers, she lowered her head to shield her bruised face and limped away.
Just as she reached the entrance, she realized her phone was missing. She turned back to search for it.
When she reached the elevator, the doors opened, and she unexpectedly saw Adrian coming out.
His tall, upright figure and chiseled features stood out, commanding attention in any crowd.
But Evelyn was puzzled. Why had Adrian left so quickly? Shouldn't he be staying with Bianca?
Not wanting to dwell on it, Evelyn lowered her head and entered the elevator.
She felt like a thief, sneaking quietly back to Bianca's room. Sure enough, her phone was lying at the corner of the door.
Evelyn bent down to pick it up, but froze when she overheard Bianca's loud, mocking laugh from inside the room. "Hah! Thinking about how that country bumpkin was beaten and couldn’t even lift her head, it feels so good!"
A country bumpkin?
Evelyn could hardly believe it. Was Bianca referring to her?
"Hah! If I hadn’t gone into the wrong room that night, it would have been me spending the night with Adrian! How could that country bumpkin get him? The thought of Adrian being with that bumpkin makes me sick!"
As the words rang in her ears, Evelyn's face went pale. Her body froze, and it felt as if she couldn’t breathe.
The truth seemed to be coming to light, yet she couldn’t bring herself to believe it.
