Chapter 4 Coming To Mateo's Office

Mateo sat in his chair as he sipped the wine in his hand. His mind was no longer thinking clearly. He had just felt happiness when Selena ran away from the wedding. Still, his joy vanished in seconds when Miracle—Selena's twin sister, replaced Selena, who ran away. If Miracle had not replaced Selena, her life would have been much better and free from his family's coercion. The sound of the intercom made Mateo immediately turn his gaze to the phone that kept ringing as he exhaled roughly when someone interrupted him. He wanted so badly to be free of this damn responsibility. Being the only son and heir to the De Luca Group left Mateo with only one option: to take over the company's duties and responsibilities. Reluctantly, with a face so flat and cold, Mateo pressed the green button to receive the call. "What's wrong? Why are you bothering me?" he exclaimed when the call was connected. "Mr. Mateo, there is a Mr. Antonio outside who wants to see you. I told him you were on a video conference, but he insisted on meeting you, sir," the secretary said from the other end of the line. Mateo let out a rough breath. He kept swearing to himself. It was useless to excuse himself for doing a video conference because if his father wanted to see him, he would never hear any excuses. Until Mateo coldly replied, "Ask the old man to come in." He immediately pressed the red button to end the call. A middle-aged man with a very handsome face and a well-built body entered Mateo's study. Lazily, Mateo looked at his father, who approached him. "You've only been married for a day and are already at work! Why don't you go on your honeymoon, Mateo!" exclaimed Antonio, the father, with a sharp look at his son. "I’m married with the daughter of your business partner. I think that's more than enough! Don't ever force me to go on a honeymoon!" replied Mateo firmly. His hands were clenched so tightly that his anger was about to boil over. Antonio let out a rough breath. He stepped closer to Mateo, his gaze sharpening. "Can you not be insubordinate! What's wrong with marrying the daughter of William Geovan? You even have the perfect wife. Even though you're not married to Selena, you're still married to William Geovan's daughter. Besides, Miracle is very beautiful and educated. She deserves to be with you!" "If you think William Geovan's daughter is perfect, why don't you marry her?" Mateo snapped sarcastically. "Watch your language, Mateo De Luca!" snapped Antonio. His gaze was fixed on his son. "Dad, go away; I don't want to be disturbed. I've always obeyed you, haven't I? I gave up my dreams because of you. I also married the daughter of your business partner. I've done everything. Don't expect more. You can rest assured that I promise I will never divorce Miracle. In public, they'll only know that Miracle and I are the loving couple you expect me to be!" Mateo grabbed the wine that was on the table and gulped it down. Then, he took a cigarette and lit it. He paid no attention to the glare his father was giving him. For Mateo, he had become the son who obeyed his father's every wish. This was enough because he could no longer be forced to do what he didn't like. Antonio growled. He tried to control his emotions. "You still have De Luca after your first name. You have no right to go against what I say! Because if I remove your surname, there will be nothing for you to do! You can't control your world with just your first name! I'm warning you! You have to learn to love Miracle!" he emphasized in a tone that did not want to be contradicted. Mateo cursed inwardly. His father had always carried his surname. He would have let go of that name long ago if he could let go. However, all his wishes had to be buried deep because Mateo could not hide his surname. He did everything to protect his mother's feelings. "Mateo," a woman barged into Mateo's office. As the woman barged into Mateo's office, Gustav—Mateo's assistant—chased after the woman. Antonio and Mateo immediately averted their eyes when they heard the woman barging in. Instantly, a smile appeared on Antinio's lips as he saw Miracle in front of him. "Sorry, I'm interrupting." Miracle bowed her head, feeling wrong about Antonio's presence. No wonder Gustav, Mateo's assistant, was holding him back. But it wouldn't be Miracle if her stubbornness wasn't there. Of course, she wanted to prove herself. Like now, she had established, and she felt bad for interrupting. "Mr. Antonio... I'm sorry Mrs. Miracle would like to see Mr. Mateo," Gustav bowed his head before Antonio. "Go away Gustav; Miracle has the right to come here whenever she wants," Antonio replied, immediately making Miracle smile. "Then you'll have to excuse me." Gustav excused himself from Mateo's study. Mateo stared coldly as Miracle was in his office. He was about to ask a question, but he decided against it because there was no way he would argue with Miracle in front of his father. Yes, of course, he was sure his father would defend Miracle. "Miracle, come here," Antonio pleaded with an affectionate look at Miracle. "Uncle, I'm sorry I bothered you with Mateo." Miracle stepped closer to Antonio. Then, he lowered his head slightly as he continued to feel bad. "Miracle." Antonio brought his hand to stroke Miracle's cheek gently. "You should call me Dad. You are now Mateo's wife. It's the same as you are my daughter." Miracle nodded. "Yes, Uncle. Sorry, I meant … Dad." Antonio smiled. "You're not used to it yet, but you will be. Anyway, I’m going to go first. I won't bother you and Mateo." "Take care, Dad," Miracle replied with a smile. Antonio kissed Miracle's forehead. Then, he walked out of Mateo's study. When Antonio was gone, Miracle immediately stepped closer to Mateo. "How do you know my office?" Before Miracle could say anything, Mateo had already asked in a voice that was so cold and piercing. "De Luca Group, the largest company in Italy. How can I not know De Luca Group's headquarters?" Miracle came closer, and she casually sat on the table as she continued, "I don't like small talk, I came here because I wanted to tell you I'm going to Rome tomorrow." "What are you going to Rome for? Do you want to run away like your twin sister?" Mateo asked back sarcastically. Miracle snorted in displeasure. She didn't answer right away. Instead, she took the wine glass in Mateo's hand and sipped slowly, "I just knew Mateo De Luca could think so intelligently. If I were to escape, I wouldn't say I wanna go to Rome. I wanna go to Rome because I'm taking my personal belongings there. Besides, Milan and Rome aren't that far away. I'm just going out of town not out of the country." Mateo grinned at Miracle's words. For a moment, he looked at Miracle intently. Miracle and Selena were like heaven and earth. Both had gorgeous faces. Although twins, they were not similar because Selena and Miracle were not identical twins. The faces are not the same, and the traits are not the same either. Selena is famous for being so graceful.
