Chapter 4 Using Carrie to Scam Money
Andrea erupted immediately, "Wow, you think you're tough now? Go ahead! Show me how tough you are! Go on! Using force on me!
"Help! Someone's breaking into my house! Someone's trying to rape me!"
Her scream summoned a group of neighbours armed with kitchen knives. They encircled Darius tightly.
"Aunt Andrea, do you really have to make things ugly? We're family. You're burning all your bridges with this."
Andrea laughed hysterically and asked, "Who do you think you are to lecture me? A penniless nobody dare talk to me about burning bridges? You think you're still the rich heir from back in the day? I would rather have prayed to the gods than beg you for help again.
"Are you leaving or not? If you don't leave now, I'm calling the police!"
Darius didn't know how he managed to leave Andrea's house. As he left, Andrea was still triumphantly cursing him as a worthless bum.
He went around borrowing money from many relatives and friends. Everyone knew he had gone bankrupt three years ago and doubted his ability to repay. Almost no one was willing to lend him money.
From afternoon until evening, he toiled tirelessly but only managed to gather a little over 7,500 dollars.
With his meager money, Darius felt lost and finally decided to return to the hospital to check on his daughter.
That vile woman had run off with her lover. He feared that if Carrie remained alone in the hospital for too long, something might happen to her.
When he returned to the hospital room, the scene before him ignited his fury.
"Everyone, this is my daughter, Cari. Today, her father disappeared to drink and mess around, leaving her alone at home. The house caught fire, and she suffered severe burns, completely disfiguring her face.
"Sob, sob, my poor daughter! She just turned five. How will she face the world in the future?
"Sweetheart, I'm so sorry. I should never have gone out looking for a job. If I had stayed by your side, this wouldn't have happened. It's all my fault."
With one hand holding her phone for a live stream, Norma secretly pressed down on Carrie's leg with the other. Carrie's face twisted in pain.
Her leg had a compound fracture; how painful must it be when her mother presses down on her injuries?
Norma pretended not to know and continued to press harder. Carrie's expression grew more painful and pitiable.
Off-camera, the man even lifted a corner of the bandage and pressed on the wound to make it bleed for the live stream.
"Mum, it hurts. Cari hurts so much!"
Carrie cried out in pain, with sweat beads covering her face and forehead. It was exactly the effect Norma wanted.
Norma shoved the phone camera closer to Carrie's face and continued to cry sorrowfully on screen. "Everyone, look at my poor daughter. Her face is completely burnt!"
The unsuspecting viewers on the live stream couldn't stand the pitiful scene. They cursed Darius for being a sc*mbag, consoled Norma, and flooded her with gifts and donations.
'Cari's mum, don't cry. We'll help you through this.'
'You're a role model for women. We'll do our best to help Cari.'
'Poor Cari! This is my pocket money for the month. I'm giving it all to you.'
The live stream's gift and comment sections exploded. Norma laughed inwardly but maintained a sorrowful facade.
Darius knew Norma played around with short videos and loved to brag about how much she loved her daughter, but he never expected her to resort to harming Carrie to cheat money.
He couldn't stand it anymore and kicked open the door, angrily grabbing Norma.
"You vile woman! Isn't it enough that you caused our daughter's disfigurement? Now you're using her pain to scam money? How can you be so heartless?"
Norma and her assistant had already anticipated his arrival. Instead of being afraid, Norma was secretly delighted.
She forcefully shook off Darius's hand and pointed the phone at him. Norma continued to film the scene and cursed, "Darius, are you even a man? You're jobless, and you can't even take care of your daughter. How dare you call yourself a father?
"Everyone, look at this sc*mbag. He's the reason my daughter got disfigured. If you see him on the street, make sure to beat him up."
Darius was furious, his rage clouding his reason.
He slapped the phone away, gritting his teeth, and said, "Norma, you're asking for it!"
Norma took the opportunity to pounce on the hospital bed, slapping Carrie repeatedly. Carrie cried out in pain, begging her mum to stop.
"You crazy woman! Let go of her!"
Darius rushed in and pulled Norma away.
"Are you insane? Cari is your own flesh and blood! How can you hit her so hard?"
Norma snarled, "I'm hitting this useless brat because if it weren't for having to raise her, I wouldn't be so poor, and I wouldn't have to endure this miserable life with you.
"Darius, I've had enough. I want a divorce!"
Divorce.
The word pierced his heart like a dagger, wounding him mercilessly.
He had provided the best for her over the last seven years. Yet she had cheated on him and had the audacity to ask for a divorce.
His face twisted with anger, and he asked, "Found someone new, haven't you? Is that why you want to leave me?"
Norma screeched like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "Darius, what nonsense are you spouting? What do you mean by someone new? I don't understand what you mean!"
Her chest heaved violently. She thought she had kept Darius in the dark, but now it seemed he knew everything.
Darius laughed bitterly in his rage. "You wretched woman, still denying it even at your end. I'm going to kill you today!"
Bam!
The door was violently kicked open, and a man dressed head-to-toe in Armani walked in.
"Wow, what a show of strength! Bullying a woman? Is that what you're proud of? If you have the guts, come at me!"
