Chapter 41
"I guess it helps when you've grown up in a rough place." He answered quietly and I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from interrupting. This was the most he had told me and I didn't want him to stop, not if it meant finding out what Adan was talking about. "After my dad died, it was just me and my mom. It was okay at first, but after a couple of months it kind of hit her that he wasn't coming back and she couldn't cope." I could hear the sadness in his voice, but what surprised me were the hints of anger that were hidden in there as well. "She had to leave work; she shut herself off from everyone and just basically became a recluse. I had to find work that paid me enough money to keep everything going."
With each word he spoke my heart pained a little more. I hated to see him this vulnerable. I had seen it once before when he first told me about his father and I hoped I would never see it again. Twisting my hands in my lap I fought the urge to reach out and pull him closer to me.
