Chapter 10
Cole stood up and walked over to the door, poking his head out to make sure no one was around. "Spill." He pushed my legs off the table and sat on it facing me. When it was clear that I wasn't going to say anything he began listing girls that I'd fooled around with. "Is it Clare?" I shook my head. "Stacey?"
"No."
"Amy?"
"No."
"Rachel?"
"Enough. It's none of them, it's no one I've had sex with."
Yet. My wolf added, speaking for the first time in hours. Stupid dog.
I sighed in annoyance, and sat forward resting my elbows on my knees. Could I tell him? I mean, it was Cole. The guy had been my best friend practically since we were born. His father was Beta to our pack and he was my father's best friend. Even our moms were best friends. Maybe it would help if I told him. Cole hadn't found his mate yet, like me he enjoyed his life the way it was, but he might know a way to get her out of my head.
Groaning I put my head in my hands. "I found my mate." I whispered, hoping he wouldn't actually hear me. Luck wasn't on my side.
Cole bounced up from the table. "You're kidding me?" He yelled, before I yanked him back down and told him to lower his voice.
"Nope, she's my mate alright." I sighed.
Damn right she is. My wolf said with pride and possessiveness. Two things I didn't feel for Carlie.
Cole's brows pulled together in confusion. "You're sure? I mean, it's not just lust for some chick that caught your eye."
I growled. "Yeah, I'm pretty damn sure she's mine."
His jaw dropped before he quickly snapped it shut again and I was thankful he ignored the protective tone in my voice when I called her mine. In the silence I could almost hear the clocks in his head working away. "Who is she?" He asked.
My mind suddenly went into frenzy. I couldn't tell him it was Carlie Berry of all people. I mean, the embarrassment of it. It was just plain humiliating to have her as a mate. Thankfully he moved on to another question, seemingly he missed my wolf growling at me for disrespecting his mate. "Where did you meet her?"
"School." I mumbled.
He seemed to consider this for a minute before he spoke, "Do I know her?" I shrugged. Cole probably wouldn't know her; I'd be surprised if anyone knew who she was. She was a nobody. The only reason I knew her was because she was friends with Jaxson and he was the son of The Shadow Pack's Alpha. "Is she in the pack?"
I shook my head. "No, she's part of The Shadow Pack." Cole let out a low whistle. Most of the girls in that pack were hot, too bad for me I ended up with Little Miss Plain.
You're lying! My wolf snapped at me, but I ignored him.
Cole lowered his voice, "What's her name, man?"
I opened my mouth and then shut it again before anything came out. Ugh, stop being such a pussy, Adan! "It's Carlie Berry."
Cole didn't miss a beat. "Carlie, who?"
"Berry." I spat through gritted teeth. My wolf was going crazy, why? Well for one I mentioned his stupid mate's name and two, because he wasn't happy that Cole was disrespecting the future Luna of our pack. Personally, I couldn't care less.
"It's not that chick with the mean ass snarl on her face?"
"No."
"Thank god." He muttered. "Oh, is that red head who's nothing but legs?"
"No."
"Is it the blond with the huge assets?" He winked.
"No."
"The brunette with the knock out body?"
"No."
"Dude, does she exist?"
I growled. "Of course she exists! It's Jaxson's friend, you know, Alpha Tom's son. The brunette who's in our history class, always with the same people, sits in the corner most of the time." He nodded, trying to picture her. I knew when he did because his eyes went wide and his jaw dropped slightly. He tried to cover it up pretty quickly. "I rejected her." I told him honestly, trying to ignore the dull ache in my heart.
"Are you sure that's what you want?" He asked worried.
I sombrely nodded. "I don't want her. An Alpha can't be with someone like that, it's not right. She couldn't be the Luna I –no we- need her to be. She's just not good enough."
Without question he nodded once. "I know what you need to do."
* * *
And that's how I ended up leaning against the lockers waiting for Carlie to come out of the nurse's office.
Cole and his stupid ideas.
His genius plan was to make sure she knows how little she means to me, how much I meant the rejection. I stood in the eerie silence of the corridor, everyone was in class and my wolf had disconnected from me the moment he knew I was going through with the plan. For the first time in my life, I was truly alone.
"Jesus, Cole." I muttered to myself as I waited for Carlie to finish up with the nurse. The dull ache that was in my heart since I rejected her only worsened with every word I linked to her in class. It was the first time I was happy my wolf wasn't with me; I don't think I could have handled him as well.
I picked up the almost silent clicking of the office door and I knew she was out. That damn smell hit me instantaneously. "Still alive then?" I sniggered.
I hadn't stepped out from behind the lockers, but I could see her looking around for me, I knew she had caught my scent. "Obviously." She grunted. I'll admit I was a little taken back by her response.
