Chapter 8 Where Is Your Ring?
On his ring finger, there was a simple diamond ring. It was the one she had bought before.
Whitney was stunned and forgot to sit down. Eventually, Stefan raised his head and looked at her.
"What's wrong?" Stefan asked. When his gaze swept over her finger, he raised his eyebrow and asked, "Where is your wedding ring?"
Hearing his question, Whitney suddenly felt embarrassed. After all, she felt that the ring she had bought was unsuitable for Stefan, so she didn't wear it in front of him. Yet, she didn't expect Stefan to find the ring she had put away and even put it on.
Whitney had no choice but to reach into her bag and take out the ring. When she put it on, she couldn't help but say, "I'm sorry. I just randomly picked the design."
Stefan smiled slightly and said, "It's fine. It looks good."
She didn't know how to respond. She could only sit down and start eating breakfast in silence.
After breakfast, Stefan folded the newspaper and said casually, "I'll take you to work."
"It's fine," Whitney said hastily. "I can take a cab or the subway."
There was no way she would allow him to drive her to work. If her colleagues recognized Stefan and found out that she was his mate, she would be killed by their jealousy.
"There won't be any public transportation coming in here." Stefan frowned. "You won't be able to find a cab. You can only travel by car."
Indeed, Whitney noticed this when she moved here yesterday. Only wealthy and prestigious werewolves lived in this affluent residential area. Since everyone drove luxury cars, there wouldn't be any cabs or other public transportation.
Whitney glanced at her watch and realized it was getting late. Thus, she said, "Could you please take me to the nearest subway station?"
At that moment, Stefan looked at Whitney, making her nervous. However, Stefan eventually nodded.
As the duo walked to the door, they saw a black Bentley parked outside. Standing by the car was a young werewolf who introduced himself as Jason. He was Stefan's assistant.
Jason opened the car door, and just as Whitney was wondering how Stefan would get in, she saw a metal plate descend from the car, and Stefan's wheelchair smoothly slid into the car. When Whitney got into the car, she noticed that the interior had been modified, with a special space for Stefan's wheelchair.
After she settled into her seat, the car quickly drove to the nearest subway station.
As the car stopped near the subway station, Stefan felt a surge of annoyance as he saw the bustling environment outside. Is our mate commuting like this every day? It must be exhausting.
Stefan frowned and said, "It's inconvenient for you to commute like this every day. I can give you a car if you don't want me to pick you up. You can either have a driver or drive it yourself."
Whitney was taken aback. She could feel Leia's excitement inside her. Darling! We should accept it! You're always so tired.
However, Whitney didn't want to owe Stefan too much. Thus, she ignored Leia's words and refused. "It's fine. I don't need a car."
Indeed, she knew that a car meant nothing to Stefan, but she still felt there shouldn't be too much dependency between them. After all, Stefan was only her nominal mate, so she couldn't rely on him for everything.
Stefan's eyes darkened when he heard Whitney's immediate rejection. He could feel Pessi's anger within him. He continued to persuade Whitney, "I'm not often at the villa, so how will you commute alone? Trust me. Having a car will be convenient for you."
Whitney had already considered this on the way earlier. She quickly took out her phone and said, "It's convenient to book a car service nowadays. I'll wake up a few minutes earlier and book a car. Well... I'm going to be late. Goodbye." With that, she quickly exited the car.
Inside the car, Stefan watched her running away. His eyes were dark.
Jason, who was driving in front, witnessed the scene and couldn't help but say, "Um... Mr. Morrison? Why do I feel that Madam is different from what we investigated before?"
Looking at Whitney's figure outside the window, Stefan was lost in thought. "Indeed. She's quite different."
I told you she's special! Pessi shouted. He was angry that Stefan didn't believe him. The information they had gathered was just superficial, while he relied on his intuition and sensed that Whitney was a unique individual.
Stefan never expected Whitney to reject his offer to buy her a car so quickly. He had sent Jason to investigate Whitney's past, and his impression of her was that she was a gold digger who would sell herself for money.
It was precisely because of this that he chose her.
After all, a woman who could be easily dismissed with money was much easier to control than those high-class ladies who cared about his wealth.
Of course, he also admitted that another reason he chose her was that he liked her. However, he didn't expect her to be uninterested in anything else he had to offer after they got married. He wondered if she was smarter than he had imagined.
Will she pretend not to want anything at first before slowly revealing her true self? Stefan's eyes darkened at the thought.
Finally, he averted his gaze.
"Drive."
...
At the top floor of the Sirius Group in Svilledale's financial district, Stefan sat at his desk, his fingers swiftly typing on the keyboard, causing the images and numbers on the screen to change rapidly.
Ring! Ring!
The phone on the desk suddenly rang. Stefan pressed a button, and Jason's voice came through the phone.
"Mr. Morrison, Mr. Doughson from the Perth Pack is here."
"Let him in."
The office door quickly opened, and a handsome man in a pink shirt entered.
"Stefan, are you still working?" The man exclaimed dramatically when he saw Stefan. "Now that you're finally married, I thought you would have gone on a honeymoon with your wife, even if you didn't have a wedding ceremony."
Stefan's eyes remained fixed on the computer screen as he replied briefly, "I don't have the time."
The man had already sat down at Stefan's desk. He wasn't bothered by Stefan's indifference and shrugged before smiling. "It's a pity that your wife married such a boring man like you."
Only then did Stefan finally shift his gaze to the man, but his expression remained impassive. "Thomas, what do you want?"
Thomas smiled even brighter. "I just wanted to see her. I want to know what kind of woman your wife is."
"There's no need for that." Stefan refused without hesitation. "You should also know the reason why I married her."
"Of course, I know." Thomas pursed his lips, and his smile slowly faded. "But no matter what, you are finally married to a woman. I believe that she must be the most suitable mate chosen by Pessi. You can let go of the past now."
When Stefan heard Thomas' words, his hands on the keyboard subtly clenched.
"There's nothing to let go of." After a moment of silence, Stefan finally replied. "The dead cannot be brought back to life."
Thomas looked at Stefan and tried to say something. However, he couldn't bring himself to say it in the end.
"What about the little girl from back then?" Thomas couldn't help but ask. "Has there been any news about her?"
