Genevieve’s breath caught in her throat as the headlights blazed into her windshield like twin suns, exposing every ounce of her panic. Her hands clenched the steering wheel, knuckles pale as bone. The guard post loomed ahead, too close. She slammed her foot down. Tires screamed. The car jolted sideways, fish-tailed. She yanked the wheel left, barely grazing the barricade. Metal groaned. Gravel spat. Then open the road.
She didn’t scream. She couldn’t afford the luxury. Her pulse drummed in her ears, louder than the roar of the engine. In her rearview mirror, figures shouted, scrambled too late. She was gone.
