The first thing Genevieve felt was cold. It wrapped around her, seeping into her skin like a second layer, numbing her fingers, her toes, the very breath in her lungs. The second thing she felt was pain, sharp, pulsing at the back of her head, like a warning whispering you don’t belong here.
Her eyes flickered open to darkness. A single overhead light buzzed faintly, casting a sickly yellow glow over concrete floors, metal walls, and the unmistakable scent of oil and rust. The space was cavernous, industrial, with shadows stretching into corners too deep to see. Her wrists ached—tightly bound behind her back. Her mouth was dry, lips pressed against the rough fabric of a gag.
