Chapter 3 Can't Marry You

Isabella watched Mason Thorton in controlled calmness. Words couldn't describe how furious she was at that point. She felt like a fool for granting his wish by appearing before him. If she had stayed back, she would have been in her new workplace attending to other customers and would later be compensated for it. She wouldn't be here talking trash with her heartless ex-boss. When she thought he had called to apologize for his misdeeds, he asked for marriage. Why would she marry a cocky and ruthless billionaire in the first place? Even though his position was only as a manager at Nexus Enterprises, he treated every other worker with pride like he was the Chairman of the establishment. As far as she could recall, there were other family members in the great Thorton family whose attention was upon the enterprises awaiting the day that the Chairman himself would position them as the new Chairman. This was the battle among the family, and she could also tell that her boss had no single chance of beating others who were more powerful and influential than he was. The present scene was so awkward that she lacked words for one minute straight. And when she finally parted her lips, the first word she uttered was, “What?” But Mason's smirk broadened even the more as he had expected her reaction. He clasped his hands together and crossed his legs. “Marry me and have a whooping sum of five hundred thousand dollars. This is a marriage contract that will last for two years only. Thereafter, we will divorce and never cross each other's parts anymore. Half of the money will be sent directly into your bank's account as a seal of the deal, while the rest is after the completion of the marriage.” He reclined on his chair and confidently watched how the young lady's face became tensed. He knew that at the end of it all, she would grab rhe offer with willingness. it didn't matter what kind of despair she felt towards him. Five hundred thousand dollars was an astronomical amount that only a few would resist, and those would possibly be as wealthy as he was. The actual reason he picked her was that he needed a very homely young lady to show his parents. Despite the innumerable riches that the Thorton family had in their possession, they had the notion of marrying a comely young lady as their future wife. In this part, Mason didn't want to take chances. “Are you accepting, young lady?” He smirked viciously at the lady's silence. A minute had gone, but Isabella still found it difficult to speak up. It wasn't as if the amount was tempting, it was, but marriage was something she cherished. More so, Mason Thorton wasn't the man of her life. At the beginning of working for him as a secretary, the relationship between them was bearable, but the minute he fired her, all the suppressed hatred and loathing she had for him exploded. It was a simple mistake that would have been overlooked easily. But, Mason made it a big deal. Therefore, she wanted to know if he had sacked her because of the same marriage contract or not. But when Mason responded, she couldn't handle it. “Yes, I sacked you because I didn't want us to get married while working at the same company. Come on, it would have looked suspicious to every member of my family, particularly my parents, whose eyes are everywhere. The moment they dig into your background only to find that you are presently an employee at Nexus Enterprises, that is the end of everything.” He explained thoroughly without breaking a sweat. Isabella noticed; this was the longest statement he had ever made in two years. But the audacity that Mason had to cut off her source of livelihood for his selfish interest was more shocking. She scoffed at his statements and shook her head sideways. The man seated before her never ceased to amaze her. Tears cascaded down her eyes freely. Now she understood the matter well. She was used to satisfying someone else's interests. Wasn't that funny? But then, she was tired of it all. She was tired of continuously satisfying her boss like he was the ruler of her life. After exceeding her maximum energy to please him for two years, she later got fired in the presence of the rest of the workers, which was beyond embarrassing, and now, the same person requests a marriage contract just to suit himself. Why was her life different from others? She was sick of everything. She slammed the coffee table and arose to her feet. “I won't marry you, Mason. You are a selfish person. Just get the hell out of my life and give the proposal to another person. If you are the last man on this planet, I would rather remain single. What a selfish man you are!” She exclaimed and sprinted out of the hall like her shoes were on fire, leaving a bewildered Mason behind. In all honesty, Mason didn't expect that turnout of events, including the insults, which was the height of it all. No woman had ever spewed derogatory words at him ever since he was born, but only his former secretary could do that. That day, he concluded that Isabella Banks was a wild woman, and that fueled the curiosity in him. He was determined to get her, come what may. He arose and frantically dashed out of the hall with the hope of catching up with her. However, the young lady had already boarded a taxi that was heading home. Isabella reached her residence a few minutes later only to find her fragile mother sobbing on an old sofa in the living room. Her bent was over as she blew her nostrils into a colored handkerchief. She was even oblivious of her daughter's presence. Then, Isabella walked up to her mother and crouched down by her side, soothing her back for the unknown. But the woman suddenly jerked off at the unexpected touch.
