The forest was heavy with silence broken only by the slow, pained footsteps of Sienna’s pack. Blood trailed behind them, smeared across fur and skin, drying on torn clothes. The sting of failure clung to them like smoke, and not even the wind dared whisper through the trees.
Sienna was the first to break the silence as they reached the makeshift camp tucked within a thicket of pine and bone-root trees. She dropped to her knees beside a fallen log, pressing a cloth against her torn shoulder, gritting her teeth against the pain. The moonlight flickered in her eyes, cold and sharp.
