Chapter 9 I'll Be Your Guard
“What? You trust her just because she said she didn't do it? Finn just died!” Maya said, a look of jealousy on her face.
However, Tony maintained a firm face. “We don't have anything on her now. Give me the evidence, and I'll personally hold the gun on her.”
Drake shrugged, while Maya bit on her teeth. But I was a bit confused. I looked at Tony again and tears welled in my eyes. 'Did he trust me?'
“Everyone will go back to their secret houses until the Blue Spring Bunker is ready. As usual, we go in batches,” Tony stated.
Usually, if there was a compromise, everyone usually had a house prepared for them until things cooled down. Drake nodded in understanding. “On it,” he said. “But…”
“What?” Tony raised his brows.
“You need another guard on you,” he said. I had noticed that Finn always accompanied him everywhere.
Tony was silent for a while. Finn's death seemed to have taken a toll on him. “I'll be fine for now…”
“No!” Drake shook his head. “It is not safe. You can't be alone.”
“Everyone is ready to go back to their families. I wouldn't want to force one of them to stay by my side,” Tony said.
Drake scratched his head. “Um, maybe I should stay,” he said.
But Tony shook his head. “Didn't you have plans with your mom?”
A guilty look appeared on Drake's face. “Yeah, I did… but… she'll understand…”
Suddenly, I spoke up. “I'll do it.”
The three heads turned to look at me. “What was that?” Maya asked in ridicule.
I pursed my lips. “I can be your guard,” I said and shrugged.
Drake burst out laughing. “Are you kidding? Hey! This is not a joke, okay?” He said, wiping away his tears. Maya sneered, but she didn't say anything.
I sighed and stood up. “I can do it, really. After all, I don't have a secret villa, do I?” I asked.
“Can you hold a gun?” Drake asked again, trying hard not to laugh. He thought that the I was funny. “You don't know what we are up against, do you?”
I was silent for a while. “A gun? Never shot a human being before. But I can try,” I said, my voice low.
“Try?” Maya asked. “What do you think he is? Some hen that needs your silly protection?”
Maya was still speaking when Tony interrupted. “She'll do it.”
“What?”
“No!”
Drake and Maya said at the same time.
“Find her a lighter gun. She'll come with me,” Tony said with finality. Maya and Drake were so shocked.
“Tony, she is a liability. You'll have to protect her and not the other way round,” Maya tried to make some sense.
But Tony brushed it off. “We'll be fine,” he said. “If there is nothing else, you can leave.”
Drake sighed helplessly. “On it, Boss,” he said and walked away. Maya stole a look at Tony again. She just couldn't believe that it was happening. She stomped her feet before walking away.
I started walking away too, but Tony creased his brows at me. “Where are you going?”
I tensely licked my lips. “Um… back to my room…”
“Not until the doctor takes another look at you. My guard can't be unhealthy,” he said coldly.
I felt embarrassed. I nodded my head and sat back on the bed. But I could tell that the man's eyes were glued on me. I felt uncomfortable and hot. “Um… thank you,” I whispered. “You didn't have to do that.”
“Do what?” Tony asked. His face had eased a little.
I licked my lips again. “Uh… I don't know… I mean, support me,” I stammered and licked my lips again.
For a while, Tony just stared at my face. And I felt even more uncomfortable. “Um… is something wrong-”
“Do you do that often?” Tony cut me short.
I widened my eyes in confusion. “Do what?” I asked. And unconsciously, I licked my lips again.
Tony's lips slightly curved up. “That,” he said in a hoarse voice. Then he imitated me licking my lips.
I felt so embarrassed that my face turned red. “Um… I…”
“So, the new patient is awake,” Dr. Stone said as he walked into the room. He was a bit surprised that Tony was still there, but he didn't comment. “So, let's check up on you…”
“Better make it worthwhile,” Tony whispered to me before walking away.
…
Very early in the morning, everyone was packed up. Tony's car was the first to arrive.
As Tony got into the car, Drake looked a little teary. “Boss, you know I could just come with you,” he said.
But Tony ignored him and looked at me. I was standing by herself. “What are you waiting for? Get in,” he said.
“Oh,” I said and clumsily got into the car. I didn't know I was supposed to share the car with him.
“I'm just a call away,” Drake said, not caring that he had been ignored. “Call me if anything feels suspicious.”
Tony scoffed and rolled up the window. “Let's go,” he said to the driver. Drake could only sigh angrily.
…
I was shocked by the house we walked into. I looked at Tony in confusion. I thought we were laying low. Why was it so magnificent?
Tony didn't say anything and began walking upstairs. I stood in the living room in confusion. I didn't know where to go.
At the top of the stairs, Tony looked down at me. “Why aren't you walking?” He asked.
I looked around tensely. “Um, where is the servant quarters?”
Tony scoffed. “Don't be so stupid,” he said. “Come up here.”
My lips moved a little, but I didn't say anything. I walked to the first floor and stood a distance from him.
Tony couldn't help but sigh. “How old are you, again?” He asked and took a step towards me.
My mind went blank for a second. Unconsciously, I took a step backwards. But I lost my balance.
But just before I fell, a strong arm grabbed me. I fell into large, warm hands instead. My heart stopped beating.
