Chapter 4 I Only Have One Father
Upon seeing the people inside the house, Hadley immediately concealed her inner wolf.
Jasper felt the pressure lift off him and immediately let out a sigh of relief. It seemed that Hadley had not yet acquired the ability to shapeshift.
Hadley entered the room, and immediately, Sylvie approached and asked, “Hadley, what happened?”
Despite her age, Sylvie's eyesight was still sharp. She noticed that Hadley's new dress was significantly shorter than usual.
Hadley grabbed Sylvie's arm. “Granny, I'm fine.”
As she spoke, she lowered her gaze to the dress she was wearing. “I... accidentally tore my dress...”
It was only then that everyone clearly saw her condition. Not only was she filthy, but her clothes were also in tatters.
Upon seeing this, Selene felt an even stronger resistance within her.
It seemed like this place was so remote and impoverished that they didn't even have decent clothes to wear!
She vowed never to return to this wretched place again!
“It doesn't matter that you tore it. I'll make a new one for you,” said Sylvie. She then turned around to introduce their guests. “Come, these are your parents, and... this is your sister.”
Hadley's gaze first landed on Jasper.
Dressed in a sharp suit, Jasper cut an imposing figure. His domineering Alpha presence was palpable. Though he was nearly fifty, he appeared to be just in his early forties.
Jasper lifted his chin arrogantly. “I'm your Alpha and also your father, Jasper Yorke.”
He began by asserting that he was the Alpha.
Lysandra glanced at her husband, then promptly turned to Hadley, feigning impatience. “Why have you kept us waiting for so long?” she asked.
“When I was coming down the mountain, I accidentally took a tumble,” Hadley responded to the woman's words.
She could sense that her own birth mother, despite her apparent impatience, was filled with an affectionate warmth for her that was almost overflowing.
“How clumsy of you.” Lysandra's face showed her displeasure. Still, she couldn't help but reach out to grab Hadley's hand, checking if she was hurt.
This was her very own daughter! The biological daughter she hadn't laid eyes on for seventeen long years!
Hadley looked at the older woman standing before him, her charm still evident despite her years. The latter seemed visibly impatient, yet her eyes were filled with unmistakable worry.
Hadley thought of her tender-hearted adoptive mother and responded gently, “I'm fine.”
“Let's go,” the authoritative voice of Jasper resonated.
“Mom, let's go. We shouldn't keep Dad waiting,” Selene urged, taking Lysandra's hand and leading her away. She had no desire to linger in this impoverished place.
“All right, all right.” Lysandra nodded repeatedly, yet she remained unmoving, simply watching Hadley.
Hadley nodded, bidding farewell to Sylvie.
Selene was eager to leave this destitute area quickly but was stopped by the elderly Sylvie.
“Selene, are you sure about not wanting to stay?” Sylvie looked at her sincerely. After all, this was her daughter's biological child. If Selene was willing, she would continue to raise her, just as she had raised Hadley.
Only then did Hadley look toward Selene. The latter's appearance was rather ordinary, and she had yet to come into the basic abilities of a shapeshifter, making it impossible to discern her level.
“Absolutely,” Selene answered without any hesitation.
A sneer of disdain almost made its way onto Selene's face, but she held it back.
Did she really appear that foolish as to forsake a life of opulence and wealth, only to endure hardship in this impoverished, remote place?
Sylvie sighed softly, “Go on, then. When you have some free time, pay a visit to your father.”
The moment her biological father was mentioned, the expression on Selene's face instantly darkened.
Before they arrived, they had conducted a background check. Her biological father was a destitute gambler and also of the lowest rank— an Omega!
Besides that, he was currently imprisoned in a werewolf jail for committing murder, where he was serving a life sentence.
She would never acknowledge such a lowly Omega werewolf as her father!
“I only have one father, and his name is Jasper Yorke,” Selene stated, forcefully pulling Lysandra away after she finished speaking.
Hadley was speechless.
Sylvie watched Selene's determined figure walk away, shaking her head helplessly. She then turned to Hadley and said, “Go with them, child.”
“Okay.” Hadley bent down to give the elderly woman a hug, whispering gently into her ear, “I'll visit Dad, and I'll also seek justice for his wrongful imprisonment!”
After she had spoken, she didn't give Sylvie a chance to dissuade her. She picked up her bag and turned to leave.
With that, Sylvie was left worriedly watching her silhouette recede into the distance.
