Chapter 7 A Great Daughter-in-law
The next day, Kendrick took Annabelle to the Gregory's old residence, and she officially met her in-laws as Kendrick's wife.
After entering the antique mahogany door, Annabelle asked, "By the way, is Marvin here, too?"
Kendrick turned to look at her. "Are you worried about running into him?"
She shook her head. "I'm not worried, but it may be a bit awkward."
"Relax. He's not here."
In fact, Kendrick didn't want Annabelle to see Marvin, either.
'I won't let you run into Marvin again,' thought Kendrick. ' It's the first time we come back to the old residence, so I definitely want no trouble. Marvin humiliated you the other day, so I won't let you two meet today. Besides, even if that happens again in the future, I won't let him off the hook. After all, you're my wife now.'
Annabelle was relieved to hear that and then she started to observe the Gregory's residence.
Unlike the Sanchez's residence, the Gregory's came with a traditional decoration style. There were pavilions and fountains, and the pleasant scenery was to Annabelle's liking.
They walked on the lounge bridge. Kendrick saw the twinkle in her eyes and asked with a smile, "You dig such an architectural style?"
Annabelle nodded. "It makes me feel very peaceful."
"You share the same taste with my grandfather. The place was built when my grandparents got married."
Annabelle knew that Ethan Gregory, Kendrick's grandfather, was alive, yet she didn't see him at the engagement party, so she asked Kendrick curiously, "Is your grandfather home today?"
Kendrick grinned and said that he hadn't seen Ethan for over six months.
After Ethan retired from the group, he had started an idle life. He had recently gone to an island with his friends.
Annabelle couldn't help but chuckle after hearing that. He felt that Ethan was an interesting old man who had a free spirit.
While chatting, they went to the main hall.
Colten was stunned the second he saw Annabelle.
He thought, ' So Annabelle is not ugly at all! Instead, she's stunningly gorgeous! Yesterday, at the engagement party, I didn't think she was good enough for Kendrick. Now that I see her, I feel that Kendrick is the lucky one. Yet probably she has nothing more than her pretty face. Forget it, you just can't have it all. No one's perfect.'
Lydia sighed silently after seeing Annabelle.
She thought, 'Annabelle is such a lovely girl. She is gentle and pretty, like a pearl hidden in the sand. What a shame that Marvin missed her and yielded her to Kendrick! Not only does he marry such a beautiful wife, but he also wins Colten's heart. What a shame!'
When it came to the wedding ceremony, Kendrick and Annabelle made it clear that there wouldn't be one, as they weren't fans of complex ceremonies.
Colten did want to hold a wedding for them, yet he didn't force them. He handed Annabelle an envelope with money he had prepared in advance.
"Since there won't be a ceremony, consider this your honeymoon fund."
Annabelle hesitated. 'I won't be part of the family for long. That's a lot of money. I shouldn't take it.'
Kendrick smiled at her. "It's Dad's gift. Just take it. There's no need to hesitate."
Annabelle pondered for a second before she finally accepted the envelope with respect.
'I'll return the money when I divorce Kendrick,' she thought.
"Thank you, Mr. Gregory."
"Mr. Gregory?" Colten smiled.
Annabelle lowered her head, feeling shy. "Thank you, Colten."
Kendrick, who was aside, couldn't help but smile. He was in a great mood.
He thought, 'Didn't see this coming. Such a catty woman can act as a good wife, too! That's my girl!'
Lydia was Kendrick's stepmother, but still, she was Annabelle's mother-in-law, so she gave Annabelle a welcome gift, which was a pair of valuable jade earrings.
"Thank you so much, Lydia."
Lydia was very fond of Annabelle sincerely and figured that only a girl like Annabelle was worthy of Marvin, who was so unruly. It was such a shame that Marvin dumped Annabelle.
Anyway, she didn't want to give Annabelle a hard time.
After chatting for a while, Kendrick was ready to leave.
He could tell that Annabelle was a bit restrained when she was with those she wasn't close to, and he didn't want to eat together with Lydia, so he got up and said bye to Colten.
Colten was well aware of what Kendrick had in his mind, so he didn't force Kendrick to stay.
Kendrick and Annabelle walked out of the residence and were about to get in the car. Then Kendrick recalled that there was a file here he needed, so he went back to fetch it and asked Annabelle to wait for him.
Across the street from the Gregory's residence was a lake, so Annabelle walked to the lake to enjoy the view.
Looking at the red carp in the lake, the two saddleback butterflyfish she raised came to her mind. She wondered how they had been doing.
Although someone had been taking care of them, she was still not at ease. After all, she had raised the two fish for more than five years and was already greatly attached to them. She didn't want anything bad to happen to them.
She figured that perhaps she should find some time to go back to the Springvale Temple to check on them. Just then, a harsh sound of brakes interrupted her thoughts.
She turned around and was surprised to see Marvin getting out of the car.
The two were only about 10 meters apart, and the moment they looked at each other, Marvin was stunned.
