The scorching, suffocating summer slowly gave way to cooler autumn days. The dandelions looked scraggly and pitiful, but they still managed to bloom, their fluffy white flowers drifting in the breeze. Some seeds settled nearby, and faint patches of green began to emerge.
After using the salted fish for maggot farming, the completely decomposed remains made excellent fertilizer. Lily spread the rotted fish across the wheat field. Despite the poor soil and the untimely planting season, a few sparse wheat stalks managed to take root and produce ears. Nadia had never expected to grow enough wheat to feed themselves—just getting it to survive was already an accomplishment.
