The group was shuffled into another dimly lit room, where each was handed a meager ration: half a bowl of murky water and a coarse, blackened bun that looked as unappetizing as it felt. Their hollowed eyes widened at the sight of food, and in an instant, desperation overtook them. They lunged like ravenous beasts, clutching at the scraps with trembling hands. The water vanished in gulps, and the stale buns were shoved into their mouths with reckless urgency. Elegance and restraint, remnants of their past lives, had long been stripped away by hunger and despair.
The frantic pace of their eating left some choking, their bodies convulsing as they forced the dry morsels down their throats. Lily lay motionless, her fragile frame slumped against the wall. One woman noticed the untouched portion meant for her and, driven by starvation, darted toward it with a feral gleam in her eye. However, before she could seize it, the woman who had been quietly tending to Lily intervened with a firm shove. "We’re all in the same hell. Don’t lose your humanity over a piece of bread," she snapped. The thwarted woman sneered, her voice dripping with disdain. "She’s not your kin. You’re barely clinging to life yourself, yet here you are playing savior. What a joke."
