Chapter 6 Get Me The Girl (Ii)

Photos was the first app Maksim checked. She had too many pictures for him to sift through. Nothing in there showed her name. Just tons of pictures of her in different poses and various hairstyles. She was pretty. But weren’t the evil ones always the prettiest? Who sent her to him? Soft knocks on the door had him shoving the ring and test into his drawer. He asked the person to enter, and a maid walked in with her head bowed down. Her black-and-white uniform creased as she bent to tilt the dead man’s head. He never killed senselessly, but Boris’ death would serve as a warning to everyone. If he could kill his own men, how much more a foe? Two men entered after the maid. He waved off their greetings as they dragged the dead body out of his office. The maid quietly cleaned as he resumed searching the phone. He could easily guess who the maids next subject of gossip would be. Him. As long as they served the meals and made themselves available when necessary, he didn’t care. Going through her photos was useless. He could do that later. Her contact was next. “Cam-il-her?” “Mr Mak?” the maid squeaked. He looked up. She was on all fours. “You called me?” “Not you.” His attention returned to the phone. Camilla May McKenna. The last name sounded familiar, but his thoughts were too scattered for him to figure it out. He zoomed in on the picture she used as her contact photo and laughed. “Camilla.” “Welcome, sir,” the maid said. Maksim raised his head as his half-brother stepped into the office. Vanya was all the things he couldn’t be. Everything he hated, and it showed in the way he treated him. “What do you want?” Maksim asked. Vanya stretched out his arms. “Hey. Is that how to greet your brother?” he teased. The mood was too terse for him to laugh. If the wedding had gone as planned, he would have spent weeks away from his lookalike. They were brothers who looked too much like twins. Except for the scar around his eyelid, he could easily pass for Vanya. “You didn’t want the wedding, anyway.” Maksim cast a look at the maid. He knew better than to say crucial matters in front of them. They were eyes and ears of the don. “Unless you want a bullet to your forehead, Vanya, state your fucking business and walk away.” “Mak—” “I killed someone here a few minutes ago. I could make you number two. What is it?” Vanya laughed, but Maksim could tell his threat worked. His brother darted a look at the floor the maid had done a good job of so far. His lookalike sank into the chair before his desk and ran his fingers across his hair. It was because Vanya kept his hair short that he started growing his. Most people couldn’t tell his hair was that long. “She’s the one.” Maksim didn’t bat an eyelid, but he knew the person in question. To the maid, he said, “Scram. Come back in ten.” When the door shut after her, he asked Vanya, “She, who?” “The bitch who ruined your wedding,” Vanya said. “She’s the one who threw a drink on me the last time I was on a date. Great tits, but she’s dumb. Spontaneous too.” Spontaneous? More like reckless. Dumb. “How do you two know each other? How did you two meet? Tell me everything.” Vanya smirked. If they weren’t related by blood, Maksim might have killed him a long time ago. In another lifetime, they could have had a relationship, not this one. “Should have listened to me when I wanted to talk about her,” Vanya grumbled. When he returned from his date last week, shirt stained and hair sopping wet, Maksim chalked it up to his usual recklessness. Still, he couldn’t bring himself to be remorseful. Vanya must have realised that too, because he sighed. “Fine. Through her best friend. I was dating her best friend.” “Was?” “Yes. Broke up with her after that incident. Don’t want to deal with women’s drama,” Vanya said. Maksim couldn’t relate. He didn’t date, he fucked. The only person he had briefly courted was Mila, and only because they were arranged to be married. “She is an exceptional woman and fucks good, but she always complains about the distance. The incident gave me the courage to end it. Sex can only keep a man for so long.” “I have no interest in hearing about your sex life,” Maksim said. “Do you have any idea where she lives? She has earned a visit.” “It should be somewhere in our chats,” Vanya replied, pulling out his phone. “I’m sure I picked Faye up from there once.” “Find and text it to me.” The door flung open, and Maksim shot to his feet. Only one person had the audacity to enter without an invitation. Vanya mostly did it to annoy him. Their father walked in, and his blood ran cold. Vanya muttered something about having a place to check and scrambled out of his office. This was one reason Maksim loathed him. He never stood up to their father for him. Oleg Alexei Kalashnikov, the current don and grand sinner, who also happened to be his father, took another step inside. Maksim rounded his desk as Papa moved all the rings on his left hand to his right. This couldn’t be good. “Papa—” Maksim had barely gotten that word out of his mouth when the don’s fist connected with his face. The rings worsened the effect of the punch. Pain shot through his nose. For a few seconds, all he heard was the constant buzz in his head.
