Chapter 5 Necklace
“What? The diamond is shattered?”
If it weren't for the clearly damaged diamond in Ysobel's hand, no one would dare to believe that it was true!
In a fit of frustration, Alvin snatched the diamond ring from Ysobel, examining it meticulously to ensure it hadn't been switched.
With a look of concern, Jonathan asked loudly, “Oh dear! How did it shatter so easily? Could it be that Mr. Langford actually bought a counterfeit?”
The others couldn't help but whisper among themselves, “Right, isn't it said that diamonds are the hardest things in the world? How did it shatter?”
“Could it really have been a scam? We're talking about eighteen million here!”
Alvin hung his head low. Hearing the surrounding chatter, he felt his face flushed and paled alternately.
At that moment, Jonathan raised his voice again. “Mr. Langford, should we call the police right away? It's ten million we're talking about, not a small sum!”
Alvin could no longer hold back. He flung the diamond ring in his hand away, snarling, “Just eighteen million? I have plenty of money! What's this amount to me!?”
Even though he said so, everyone present knew that he was bleeding inside!
Alvin forcefully ignored the sympathetic yet mocking gazes from the crowd and said to Josephine, “Josephine, I'm sorry. I'll make up for your birthday gift next time.”
At this point, he was too embarrassed to bring up the matter of proposing again.
Josephine quickly assured that it was no problem.
Jonathan chuckled inwardly. The diamond is indeed real. It's just that these people lack discernment.
Although diamonds are hard, they are incredibly brittle. If you drop one with force, it could very well shatter!
However, Jonathan couldn't possibly tell them this.
Seeing the unabashed smile on Jonathan's face, Alvin felt his mood worsened.
At this point in the unfolding events, everyone was feeling a bit uneasy. It was safe to say that the birthday party was ruined.
At that moment, Ysobel suddenly exclaimed, “Jonathan, didn't you say you came specifically for Josephine's birthday? You must have prepared a gift, right?”
“Even though Mr. Langford was deceived, the money was genuinely spent on Josephine!”
“Even the gifts we gave are the latest model smartphones, Chanel perfumes, and bags. What about you? As Josephine's ex-husband, what kind of gifts did you prepare for her?”
The reason Ysobel said this was merely to cater to Alvin's feelings. Jonathan was someone she brought along the way. What kind of gift could he possibly be?
“Exactly. Why don't you hurry up and show it to me?”
A group of people were relentlessly mocking and ridiculing, and Alvin once again looked at Jonathan with a face full of disdain.
I can't wait to see him become the laughingstock!
“I've had the gift ready for a while now!” With these words, Jonathan pulled out a plastic bag from his pocket. Inside it was a necklace that. At first glance, it seemed quite inexpensive!
On the necklace, there was a piece of purple gemstone!
At first glance, one might think it was a knockoff found by the streets for just over ten bucks!
“Jonathan, is this the gift you've prepared for Josephine?” The moment Jonathan presented the gift, the entire room suddenly burst into laughter!
Everyone looked at Jonathan as if he was looking at a fool. “Where did you buy this from? A roadside stall? Did it cost you thirty or fifty?”
“I bet it doesn't even cost a hundred, right?”
“I made it with my own hands!”
No matter how they mocked him, Jonathan remained unfazed!
He couldn't even be bothered to pay them any mind!
Thirty or fifty?
Even if you're willing to spend thirty or fifty million, no one can hope to get this necklace from me!
This necklace was his war trophy from North Bera, seized from the Northern Border's royal palace! And that purple gem was originally embedded in the crown of North Bera's emperor, forcibly plucked out by Jonathan!
Moreover, this was a necklace personally crafted by him, the mighty Asura!
Its value simply couldn't be measured in terms of money!
“If it's handmade, then it's even less valuable!” Josephine's best friend sneered, “Who knows if you just picked up a broken beer bottle from some trash can, smashed it, and strung it onto a necklace?”
She would never believe that Jonathan could afford to give a gemstone, even if it killed her!
How can a good-for-nothing, who has been mooching off the Smith family for an entire year, afford to give a gem worth hundreds of thousands?
“Exactly, consider Josephine's status...” Josephine's other best friend chimed in with a smirk, “Not to mention Mr. Langford, even the gifts we give are never less than ten thousand...”
“Look at this shabby necklace of yours. It might not even be worth a hundred. Are you sure you want to give it as a present?”
“Why not?” Jonathan was indifferent. “What's the big deal about the Seraphic Star worth eighteen million? Compared to this necklace, it's no different from trash! This necklace is worth a hundred pieces of Seraphic Star!”
Lunatic!
What a lunatic!
When Jonathan uttered those words, the crowd couldn't help but roll their eyes!
One is worth a thousand pieces of Seraphic Star?
Is his shabby necklace really worth a billion?
“Jonathan, enough is enough!” Finally, Josephine couldn't hold it back anymore.
Before, she simply thought of Jonathan as a good-for-nothing, lacking ambition, no different from a loafer who only knew how to eat and wait for death.
However, it was only today that she realized that Jonathan was not just a good-for-nothing, living off others and waiting for death, but he was also a vain, lying parasite!
A necklace worth a billion?
I can't believe he had the nerve to say that!
Isn't he embarrassed?
“Get out of my sight!” Josephine pointed at Jonathan as she thundered. “Come and see me again when you've rid yourself of your annoying habits of boasting and lying!”
