Chapter 5
Coffee Shop
By midday, Camilla was both mentally and physically exhausted and wide awake. She had made six cups of coffee before Logan had been satisfied with his coffee and by then she had drunk all five cups prior. After the coffee drama she had to go through the horrendous process of getting him breakfast which she passed on her seventh attempt. When she finally sat at her desk, she found out that she had an email filled with tasks she was expected to complete all before 5 p.m. Surely there was no way she was going to make it in time for her coffee date. She could not even bear the thought of stomaching a drop of coffee at this point. Besides, with the workload she had, there was no way he would expect that she could meet up with him later.
At exactly 5 pm she saw Logan stroll out of his office with his bag, an indication that he was done for the day. Camilla sighed in relief, she could finally have some peace.
“I am still waiting on about three reports, ensure they are on my desk before midnight,” and with that, he was gone from her sight.
She scoffed as she watched him disappear. Really? He expected her to finish up before midnight. How on earth was that possible? Still, she needed her job and so carried on. She was determined to finish her work before the deadline.
When it was 7 pm her phone beeped and she checked only to find a message from Logan saying I don't see you, our date was for 6:45.
Camilla gasped upon seeing the message. So he really expected her to show up on this date or rather meet when he had worked her tired throughout the day?
Her phone rang briefly once more and she saw a message from him that read:
You don't intend to stand me up, do you?
The reply Camilla had in mind to send was, go fuck yourself, psycho, but the image of her mother laying unconscious on her sickbed made her inhale deeply, shut down her system and make her way to the elevator.
Thankfully, the coffee shop he had chosen for their date was only a few blocks away from the office. When she entered the shop, she saw Logan sitting in a corner reading a newspaper. She took another breath before taking a step further. She noticed that all eyes in the shop were on Logan but Camilla shook her head at the ignorance of the persons present. If only they knew how cruel-minded that handsome face was.
When she reached their table, she cleared her throat and said hi with a smile. Logan barely acknowledged her.
She was about to express her displeasure at being ignored when he looked up and said, “You are late.”
“Should I tell you why?” her tone was sarcastic.
“I do not care. Ensure it does not happen again,” Logan ignored her sarcasm.
“Well, let me tell you why future husband, my boss is the absolute worst so if I come back home late while we're married do not blame me,” said Camilla venting out her frustration.
“Why then? Allow me to brief you about my day. I spent it with a stupid wit who had no clue about her duties as my secretary, what an extraordinary day we've both had, I'm sure you agree we are perfectly suited for each other seeing as we both work with extremely annoying people,” he said it with a hint of a smile on his lip and although he was being sarcastic there was nothing in his tone to suggest so.
“Extremely annoying? I believe I'm working with a sadist who enjoys seeing others in pain,” replied Camilla.
“A sadist? I wonder how HR would react to such a definition of your direct boss,” he said calmly.
“I am certain they will agree,” she was daring him and she wasn't sure what gave her the confidence. Perhaps, five cups of coffee had done it.
“You forget who pays their salary,” he said with a cheeky smile.
Camilla shook her head, she could not believe he was this petty.
“If you intend to dismiss me let me know now so I do not have to return to the office to finish a report my boss is expecting by eight in the morning,” she was too tired for this. If Logan intended to be a complete jerk both as a fake husband and a real boss then she could not endure both; she was sure she would go insane.
“Fortunately, I am a gracious person but my patience only extends this far. You have three days to adjust to your schedule and read the damn handbook!”
“You are unbelievable!”
“I know. Many people have told me so.”
They were quiet for a while.
“Shall we order?” It was Logan who broke the silence.
“Order? I have chugged down five cups of coffee, I cannot stand the fragrance of…”
“You drank the coffee that was meant for me?”
Camilla was quiet.
“Miss secretary?”
“I meant that I have prepared so much coffee today that it makes me sick to think of coffee,” Camilla said but she could not understand why he seemed mad about her drinking the coffee; it would have been a waste anyway.
“And you drank from my cup five whole times?”
“Of course not! I poured it away,” she replied but she was lying and she knew he could tell that she was.
“Camilla?”
“Why do you even care? It was going to be a waste anyway,” she defended her action.
“Seriously? A few cups?”
Camilla stared at him and smiled.
Was it not good that he could say so? There was a time in her life that even instant coffee was difficult to afford and Logan had meant to waste five cups of very expensive coffee.
“Next time, pour it away, understood?”
