Chapter 61 Cold

Matt had to admit that his feelings didn't really have anything to do with wanting to be friends. For some reason, he had found himself drawn to her since the first time he'd met her. Who wouldn't be. She was beautiful and every time he closed his eyes he could see only her. There was the perfect creamy skin, the long dark hair and those green eyes. Each a feature that he had come to know so perfectly in his head. Every time he looked at her his eyes tended to fall on those pink sensuous lips. It was no wonder he scared her the way he did. He'd thought of asking her out but he knew his father wouldn't approve. He already thought he was a fool for being too friendly with the workers. That would only make his relationship with his father even more strained. But then again Matt had never really cared about his relationship with his father. The old man could fire him if he thought Matt wasn't doing a good job. Since he hadn't so far, nothing he would say mattered the least to him. Matt was so distracted when his phone rang that he almost jumped out of his seat hitting his knee on the desk. He grunted in pain as he stretched his hand out for the receiver. This day was not very promising to him. He'd be lucky if he reached the end of it with no concussion. "Hello," he said. His voice was cheery but the expression on his face was far from it. "Hello there son," his father's stern voice answered. "Are you still coming to the wedding?" the older Mr. Carson asked. Matt had always wondered how he never bothered on any formalities preferring instead to go straight to the point. "The wedding?” he asked cautiously. "Your aunt's wedding," the old man said in exasperation. He'd been reminding Matt of the wedding for the whole week now and his son still couldn't bring himself to remember a thing. It was a wonder he got things done in the company. "Oh. The wedding. Of course I'm coming. I wouldn't miss it for the world," he lied through his teeth. Matt had never been a big fan of his Aunt Cathy and Aunt Cathy had never liked him either. The woman had too much in common with his father though it was not very surprising considering that she was his sister. "Good," his father replied satisfied with the answer, "don't forget to bring a date." His father hung up immediately not even bothering to ask about Matt's day or how he was doing. Matt would have appreciated the fatherly concern but his old man was beyond that. Matt was left wondering about his father's last statement. His aunt had insisted that he bring a date but Matt had no idea who he was going to take. It couldn't be a hard decision when Matt always had women fawning over him. He was after all a very good looking man and his success did nothing to push them away. However, despite his vast selection, there was only one woman that Matt could think about. Matt decided that he would ask her to be his date. His father would be upset but Matt had rarely done anything to please the man. Why start now? He left his office and walked to her desk. As usual, she was concentrating on her computer. She could be a hard worker if she wanted to. He walked stealthily toward her. Sneaking up on her was probably not his brightest idea but for some reason, Matt had always liked to scare her. She looked cute like that. He placed a hand on her shoulder and just as he had expected, she jumped out of her seat. Her eyes widened in shock when she saw it was him. It was as if no one else could ever scare her as much as he did. "Mr. Carson? How can I help you?" she asked uneasily. "I have a wedding to go to and I need a date," he answered with a shrug of his shoulders. "Then I'll call some of your friends for you," she offered her eyes squinting in curiosity. She was pretty sure that this was not in her job description. Matt found himself laughing. She started at him in horror as if she'd made the world's most stupid mistake. She never knew where she stood when it came to him. "I don't want to go with my friends Eva. I want you to be my date," he said his eyes lighting up as if only the thought of having Eva by his side at the wedding got him excited. "Okay Mr. Carson's," he voice was barely a whisper and he wouldn't have gotten her if he wasn't looking so keenly at those beautiful lips of hers. He smiled glad that she'd accepted that proposal. He got hold of a stray strand of her dark hair and tucked it behind her ear absently. He thought of kissing her but she was just too afraid of him. He wanted to be with her on her own terms not because she was too frightened of him and would do anything he asked. "Call Brenda and she'll fix you up with a dress to wear," he instructed, "I'll pick you up tomorrow morning." "Tomorrow?" she asked timidly. "Do you have plans tomorrow?" for a moment his excitement seemed to be replaced by worry. He had no idea that Eva turning him down could have such an effect on him. She shook her head vigorously and he felt he could relax. He went back to his office feeling like he'd conquered something only for once in his life, the girl didn't look like she wanted to be conquered. He worried that maybe he'd put too much pressure on her knowing how delicate she was. Maybe he should have eased into it. But then again knowing Eva, she would have been frightened no matter what he had said. The fact that he had touched her hair didn't help though. It might have confused her even further. However, Matt didn’t regret it. In fact, he would do it over and over again if he had the chance. To feel that soft hair run between his fingers had been an honor. Matt couldn't bring himself to focus on work that day and at night, he had trouble selling. All he could think about was Eva and how their day together was going to be. He could already picture her giving in to his charms. It was a farfetched thought but weddings did tend to make people let loose. He, however, doubted that his Aunt Cathy's wedding could have the same effect on anyone. The woman had been married four times and this would be her fifth. It was no wonder he hadn't even remembered this wedding. It was not very likely to last. He tried to remember who the new husband could be. The last time he'd seen a man with his aunt, it had been a man much younger than her and he had a feeling even younger tan himself.
