The house had become familiar—almost too familiar. It was strange how quickly I had gotten used to it. How I had accepted such a huge, priceless gift from him. I know, I know. He said there was nothing too much for me, that he could hand me the entire world and heaven if he could. That I deserve all the good things that heaven and earth have to offer. But honestly, I was just a very simple girl. As much as I wanted to believe his words, I still felt he was investing too much in me. That he was giving me too much. But despite that, there was still that joy that lingered within me when I looked back at the things he had done for me or even counted them. There was that wave of thrill I could not hide.
I wandered from room to room without thinking, my feet leading me through the long corridor, past the guest lounge, and finally to a door I had only passed by a few times: Dr. Aldrich’s office. Yes, he had converted one room to be his office. He could not stand being away from me even for a second. I felt so special. I felt on top of the world.
