Chapter 6 What Others Have, My Wife Shall Have Too
Vivienne was shaking with rage, almost beside herself. It took her quite a while to suppress the anger in her heart. Then, she forced herself to say to the other noble ladies, "That bitch is talking nonsense. Arthur is perfectly fine! Come on, let's go in and have our meal."
I wonder how many people would believe her. After all, how could a mother know more about her son's sexual ability than his fiancée?
At the door of the private room, I saw that just as Vivienne and the others were about to sit down and order, they were stopped by the manager who rushed over. "Sorry, the Gilded Café doesn't welcome you ladies."
Vivienne was furious. "What do you mean?!"
The manager gave a formulaic smile. "I'm sorry, it means exactly what it says. Please leave."
Vivienne raised her voice. "Do you know who I am? How dare a mere restaurant offend me? Who do you think you are?"
The manager's eyes showed a flash of impatience. "Even if Mr. Cavendish himself showed up, you'd still have to leave! Our boss said that you've offended our boss's wife, and the Gilded Café will never welcome anyone from the Cavendish family again!"
Vivienne couldn't stand the whispering and stares from onlookers. She left in a rage, taking her companions with her.
But I was puzzled. When on earth did she offend the boss's wife of the Gilded Café? I was completely mystified.
After watching the show, I entered the private box.
All the dishes had been served. Edward poured me a glass of water and said, "Miss Lancaster, you're quite eloquent."
I almost choked on a piece of steak. "Oh, you flatter me."
Edward raised an eyebrow and casually probed, "Yet I've heard that Miss Lancaster is meek and easily bullied. But seeing you today, you're sharp-tongued, nothing like the rumors."
What did he mean by that? Was he perhaps thinking I was too fierce?
Right, I've heard that men usually like delicate and vulnerable girls. Maybe Edward didn't like seeing me being so forceful when arguing with Vivienne.
I managed to marry Arthur's uncle with great difficulty. I can't give Edward any chance to propose a divorce before I get my mother's inheritance.
I put down my fork and said in a plaintive tone,
"Edward, Mrs Cavendish was just being too much. She used to mock me every time we met. I was just so angry this time."
Edward glanced at me casually. "Is that so? Hearing how articulate you were, Miss Lancaster, I thought this was just your natural personality."
"No, you saw it yourself. Lady Cavendish came to pick a fight with me first. In fact, I'm not one to stir up trouble at all. I've always…"
Before I could finish, a question suddenly occurred to me.
Right! Edward was there the whole time when I was arguing with Mrs Cavendish, wasn't he?
Mrs Cavendish saw Arthur's uncle beside me… and she didn't react at all?
Edward and her husband are brothers, aren't they?
A sense of foreboding suddenly welled up in my heart. I looked straight at him. "Edward, why doesn't Mrs Cavendish recognize you?"
Edward narrowed his eyes, as if he found my question rather odd.
Edward blinked and gave a vague reply,
"Not everyone is worthy of meeting me."
I thought for a moment and instantly understood. There's no need to meet insignificant people.
Although Vivienne was Mrs Cavendish, she didn't really count for much in the huge Cavendish family. I'd heard that the Duke of Cavendish was quite dissatisfied with Vivienne. So it was normal that she'd never met Edward.
Edward truly lived up to his status as the heir of the Cavendish family; his words were so assertive.
I immediately felt relieved and stuffed the unfinished steak into my mouth, smacking my lips and saying, "I thought with the Gilded Café being so famous, the food would be something special. Turns out it's just so-so."
Edward gave a 'mm' sound. "It's just an ordinary restaurant. I don't know how it became a place to show off one's status."
I was puzzled. "Then why did you bring me here?"
Surely Edward didn't need to come to this kind of restaurant to prove his status.
Unexpectedly, Edward said casually, "I heard that Miss Lancaster had never been here, while that illegitimate daughter was a regular. Whatever others have, my wife should have too. She shouldn't lose out."
I was stunned!
Did Edward mean that he brought me here on purpose because he knew I'd never been?
My father, Arthur, and everyone else always doted on Vivian while I was left in the countryside.
This was the first time someone had thought of me.
My face was practically overflowing with gratitude. Arthur's uncle was really different from that scumbag Arthur. There were good people in the Cavendish family after all!
After the meal, I was still thinking about how to thank Edward.
"Miss Lancaster,"
Just then, Edward's voice came softly, interrupting my thoughts.
"I'll give you half a year to sort out your mess. After half a year, I'll make our marriage public."
I was taken aback, and my heart skipped a beat. "Make it public? There's no need, is there?"
I only needed the marriage certificate to get my inheritance. I didn't really want to be married to this man in front of me.
Edward's lips tightened, and a dangerous glint flickered in his eyes. "Miss Lancaster, your experiences are rather complicated. Since I've gotten married, I have no intention of getting divorced. So it's better to make it public."
The spark of gratitude in me was instantly doused. What did he mean by my experiences being 'complicated'?
Was it because of what Mrs Cavendish had said that he was dissatisfied with me?
A wave of grievance welled up in my heart, yet I couldn't actually divorce him!
The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I gritted my teeth so hard that my face turned purple.
I'd been so touched just now, all for nothing!
"I'll have Nicholas move your things to Ravensworth Manor…"
Edward stopped mid-sentence, his eyes narrowing with a hint of amusement. "What are you doing?"
My angry face was caught right in his line of sight.
Right in front of Edward, I wasn't flustered at all. I quickly forced a smile. "I think what you said is spot-on. I'm working out my jaw muscles!"
Edward was silent for a moment. "Miss Lancaster, your ability to think on your feet is quite astonishing."
I took this 'compliment' without a qualm. "I think so too. Thanks for the praise."
Back at Ravensworth Manor, Edward suddenly said, "If you're free tomorrow evening, would you accompany me to an auction?"
This man had just made me angry, and now he was talking about going to an auction together.
Still, on the surface, I pretended to be very delighted. "Sure, I'd be happy to."
Edward looked away with a meaningful expression, as if he couldn't stand my acting skills.
After taking a bath, I lay on the bed, frowning.
When I was trying to find a witness who could prove Vivian had framed me with doctored pictures, I was too hasty. I left some clues, and now there's someone following up on them to look into me.
It's strange. The force has been looking into me for so long, yet they've never shown themselves. I have no idea if they're friends or foes.
What on earth do they want?
Well, it doesn't matter.
I no longer live in the Lancaster family's place. My top priority is to get my mother's belongings back as soon as possible. Since I'm free tomorrow, I might as well pay my grandfather a visit.
The next afternoon, I ignored Edward and walked out with brisk steps.
I drove to my grandfather's villa.
Before I was sent to the countryside, I'd left all my mother's belongings with my grandfather. He was the only one in the family who felt sorry for me. He'd promised that he wouldn't let Isabella get her hands on my mother's things.
Following my memory, I walked to the door of a room on the second floor of the villa.
This room, the second-largest bedroom in my grandfather's villa, was specially reserved for me.
I took a deep breath. But as soon as I pushed the door open, I froze in my tracks.
The once clean and tidy room was now piled high with furniture. The big pink bed in the middle was blatantly telling me that the owner of the room had changed!
But what about my mother's things?
Just then, a voice came from behind me.
