Chapter 6 He Bought Her a High-Coverage Accident Insurance
Everyone was saying that he was gravely ill and could not survive past a month. Yet, she spoke nonchalantly, her casual words delivering a powerful blow to him.
The man's Adam's apple bobbed slightly as he nodded toward her, saying, “Settle down without worry. If you need anything, feel free to tell the butler. They will cater to all your requests.”
Jonathan spoke, then took large strides toward the exit.
Gabrielle turned her head to watch the man's retreating figure, a flicker of surprise flashing in her eyes.
She had assumed that he would question the words she had just spoken and the list she had handed over. Yet, to her surprise, he didn't ask anything and easily believed her.
It was evident that this man was mentally strong. His emotional stability and maturity set him apart from other affluent young men of his status. However, this also implied that he was a deep thinker with an extremely strategic mind.
In truth, she had no recollection of Jonathan. In her previous life, she had died before the arranged marriage took place. All she knew was that the Zechman family was wealthy enough to rival a nation, being the top-tiered elite in Drocver. However, due to Jonathan's severe illness...
As for whether he died later on, she wasn't certain.
With that thought in mind, Gabrielle finally shifted her gaze away, falling back onto the bed.
Beep! The phone was incessantly buzzing with countless messages, all of them sent from the Seavers family.
They questioned her, asking why she had upset Marilyn and why she emptied out the dowry.
She was berated for tormenting Chloe to the point where the latter almost committed suicide.
There wasn't a hint of emotion in Gabrielle's eyes. Her feelings had long been buried with her death in her past life.
Yet, the information she had about the Seavers family served as a reminder to her. It wasn't enough to just sever ties. She needed to completely cut off all connections with them.
“It's me...” Gabrielle quickly dialed her assistant and asked, “By the way, since I joined Seavers Group, how many contracts have I signed?”
On the other end, someone spoke dismissively. “What contract? Wasn't it just buying some accident insurance?”
Gabrielle's heart dropped as she remembered when she had just returned to the Seavers family, she had indeed signed a few insurance policies. At that time, they said it was insurance, but she hadn't expected it to be accident insurance.
“Send me a copy of all my contracts,” Gabrielle said in a hushed tone.
The other party abruptly hung up the phone. Although that was her assistant, no one paid her any mind because she was a celebrity who was not famous.
In no time, the assistant sent over a digital contract.
Upon seeing the message, Gabrielle hastily opened it. To her surprise, she found several high-value accident insurance policies. Astonishingly, the beneficiary was none other than Chloe.
Therefore, if anything were to happen to her, or even if she were to die, Chloe would receive a compensation of two hundred million. Gabrielle was utterly shocked. Until her last breath in her previous life, she had no idea she had signed such a thing.
It seemed that the incident where they forced her into a proxy marriage, stripping her bare and filming her when she refused, intending to blackmail her, was all a sham.
They were truly intent on driving her to her demise. As long as she was dead, Chloe would directly inherit two hundred million.
“It seems that ever since I returned to the Seavers family, they never intended to let me leave alive,” Gabrielle said in a cold voice.
Claiming it wasn't painful would be a lie. After all, she had been used by her own parents.
Even now, she couldn't comprehend. She was their biological child, and they were the ones who had sought her out. Why, then, had they enticed her to sign these contracts?
What was their aim? Was it merely for these hefty insurance payouts?
With this in mind, she opened the final contract, the one she had signed with Seavers Group's entertainment company. The contract was set to expire in half a month. If she wanted to terminate it before then, she would have to pay a penalty of one billion.
“D*mn!” Gabrielle instantly leaped out of bed.
She couldn't help but curse out loud, expressing her disgust at the shamelessness of the Seavers family, as well as her own foolishness in her past life.
Before she could hurl another insult, her assistant's call came through. “The company has booked you for a variety show,” she informed, “You'll be heading there tomorrow. When you return, your contract will have conveniently reached its expiration.”
Gabrielle was rendered speechless, her eyes slightly narrowed.
Upon hearing the word “variety show,” she felt an ominous premonition in her heart.
However, she wasn't foolish enough to consider terminating the contract. Regardless of whether the compensation was a billion or just ten bucks, she had no intention of letting the Seavers family off the hook cheaply.
As soon as she had taken the place of the bride, the Seavers family thrust her into the world of variety shows, clearly intending to set her up for failure.
Unfortunately, Gabrielle was never afraid of taking risks.
“Send me the documents,” Gabrielle commanded in a frosty tone.
The assistant acknowledged with a sound, then promptly hung up the phone.
In no time, she received the information about the “variety show.” It was an outdoor reality show where several celebrities were dropped off on a deserted island to live, with the entire process being broadcast live.
It was akin to surviving in the wilderness.
After Gabrielle learned more about the variety show, her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. Looking at the hefty accidental insurance that her assistant had just sent over, she hurriedly sent this contract to her email for backup.
“It seems that after having me marry in her stead, she couldn't wait for me to die,” Gabrielle murmured with a smile.
She wouldn't have believed that right after her falling out with the Seavers family and subsequently marrying into the Zechman family on behalf of Chloe, the Seavers family would still so “kindly” arrange for her to take over a variety show to boost her popularity.
After she returned to the Seavers family for seven months, they never treated her as a person, let alone cherished her.
Looking back, it seemed that the initial intention of getting her to sign a contract with Seavers Group was merely to force her into breaking it, so they could collect a hefty compensation fee. Unexpectedly, she was not only naive but also compliant, showing no signs of wanting to leave.
Thus, they had no choice but to force her into marrying someone in Chloe's stead. They simply wanted to kick her out.
Assigning her to a variety show now was essentially sending her to a deserted island. If something were to happen and she was to die on that island, then the accidental insurance policy would kick in.
Moreover, it was common for production teams to provide insurance for the participants in such variety shows, and that was precisely what caught the Seavers family's eye.
However, they were too impatient.
Were they in such a rush to send her to her doom, eagerly awaiting a hefty compensation?
For some unknown reason, her mood suddenly improved significantly.
If I don't seek some fun and excitement, I'd truly be letting down my suppressed foolishness.
With that thought, she promptly lay back on the bed, intending only to rest her eyes for a bit. However, the tranquility here was so soothing that it eased her constant vigilance as if a tightly strung bow had been loosened. Before long, she had fallen asleep.
Meanwhile, at the Zechman residence...
In the quaint side hall, sunlight streamed in through the wooden window frames, casting its glow on the coffee table nearby.
A figure rushed in from outside, his hand holding the documents trembling with urgency. In a hushed voice, he muttered, “D*mn... Who gave you this prescription? I've just examined it and even showed it to my grandfather. He said this medicine could work. Typically, only a seasoned traditional medicine practitioner could prescribe such a remedy. Although it wouldn't completely detoxify, it could certainly keep things under control for a short period. My grandfather said that even he hadn't anticipated this particular remedy. He could tell from the prescription that it's viable, but he isn't sure about the dosage.”
He spoke as he passed over the documents.
The man's attractive fingertips lightly tapped the documents as he said, “Also, the test results from your blood extraction show that the toxicity in your body has been suppressed. D*mn! Who's so capable? Your poison has already infiltrated your bloodstream, yet they were able to purify some of the toxicity in your blood. Previously, it was assumed you wouldn't live past a month, but now it seems that might not be the case! John, there's hope.”
Michael Lefevre was visibly excited.
Jonathan studied the lab results handed to him, a complicated emotion flickering in the depths of his eyes. After a moment, he passed the iPad over.
