Chapter 6 A Misunderstanding
“It depends.”
Bathed in confusion, Cassandra raised her head. “I don't understand what you mean.”
“Sell yourself to me,” Hansel said with a cold smirk. “If you become my wife, it's only natural that I would cover the surgery costs for you.”
Cassandra felt a slight tremor in her heart.
She wasn't the type to look down on the poor and fawn over the wealthy. Marrying into a rich family didn't appeal to her.
However, the chance to regain her eyesight was something she couldn't ignore.
The desire to heal her eyes and return to university life burned intensely within her.
With that thought, Cassandra nodded resolutely. “All right, I'll marry you.”
“I happen to be free this afternoon. I'll take you to City Hall to register our marriage.”
“So soon?” Cassandra nervously bit her lower lip.
While others were eager to marry into the Fitzgerald family, she was an exception. When she heard that, she didn't express any joy; instead, she was filled with worry.
Her momentary panic brought to Hansel's mind a startled fawn in the woods, utterly captivating in its innocence.
A slight smile played on his lips. Suddenly, he thought that getting married might not be such a bad idea after all.
At the very least, he would have someone like her by his side in the future, a naive girl who wore her heart on her sleeve.
Hansel, used to dealing with people who had hidden agendas and would smile in his face while plotting against him, had never before met anyone as genuinely naive as Cassandra.
He hoped she wasn't pretending.
Upon Cassandra's admission to the hospital, Hansel promptly arranged for a dedicated housekeeper to attend to her daily needs and meals.
Lydia helped Cassandra change into a pristine white outfit, which highlighted her delicate and flawless appearance.
Hansel gazed at her, momentarily lost in a trance.
He quickly composed himself and, with a hint of indifference, said, “Let's go.”
The driver parked the car in front of City Hall.
Hansel led Cassandra out of the car and they walked in.
During their wedding photo shoot, the staff couldn't help but exclaim, “You two are a match made in heaven. Could the bride please open her eyes?”
After hesitating for a couple of seconds, Cassandra opened her eyes.
The process was swiftly completed, and they found themselves holding a marriage certificate.
Hansel was captivated by the photo of Cassandra.
This was his first time seeing her with her eyes open. But those beautiful, bright eyes, meant to sparkle with life, were now like dusty gems, their vibrant colors dulled to a lifeless gray.
If her eyes could be healed, he could only imagine how stunning she would become. Without a doubt, she would attract countless admirers.
Cassandra didn't expect to get married so soon.
Despite not knowing what her husband looked like or much about his family background and home situation, she believed that anyone with such a wonderful grandmother must be exceptional as well.
At the very least, they were willing to help her treat her eyes. If it were someone else, they probably would have abandoned her and run away at the mention of the surgery cost.
Cassandra took a deep breath, quickly coming to terms with the fact that she had gotten married on the spur of the moment.
“I have some business to attend to at the office. I'll have my assistant take you back to the hospital.”
“All right.”
Hansel was quite pleased with her.
He had been concerned that she would become overly attached and interfere with his work.
However, she seemed to be rather perceptive.
Hansel's mind was solely filled with economic trends and company reports. He had always detested clingy women.
The assistant drove Cassandra back to the hospital. Noticing her gentle and well-mannered demeanor, he couldn't resist starting a conversation. “Did you begin university just this year?”
“Mm-hmm.” Cassandra nodded. “I started school a bit late, so I'm only in my first year of university now.”
She excelled academically, but her parents, preferring her to stay home and care for her younger brother, had attempted to withdraw her from school twice.
Cassandra was good-natured, but she was not naive. Growing up in her family, she knew that without education, there was no way forward. So, despite the immense struggles and hardships, she was determined to return to school.
Although she was delayed for two years, the outcome was ultimately positive. She finally gained admission to the university of her dreams.
Once her eyes were healed, she could return to university to continue her studies.
“I would appreciate it if you could relay a message to Mr. Gerald for me. Once my eyes are healed, I will willingly divorce him to avoid causing him any further inconvenience.”
“Mr. Gerald?”
“His name is Fitz Gerald, right?”
She heard Kiera refer to him as “Mr. Fitzgerald” and assumed his name was “Fitz Gerald.”
The assistant couldn't help but chuckle. “Ms. Miller, you're really adorable.”
The assistant couldn't believe that such an innocent young girl, naive to the ways of the world, could be a scheming woman with plans to harm Mabel.
It must have been just a misunderstanding.
