Chapter 1 Good News

Reyna Point of view I couldn’t believe it. I stared at the papers in my hand with a huge grin. Alex would be so pleased, this is what he had always wanted. It was what I wanted, and I was never happier. I thanked the doctor and slipped into my car, heading home after shopping a bit. I couldn’t believe it. I was pregnant and Alex and I were going to have a baby. What more could a woman wish for? I got home early, and I frowned when I saw Alex’s car in the driveway, parked. Alex wasn’t usually home by that time. Why was his car there? I pushed open the sliding glass door and walked in slowly. Everywhere was quiet as it should be, leaving me wondering. Why was Alex’s car parked in the lot, and where was he? Maybe he had come back home to retrieve his documents. I pushed open the study door and saw it empty, save the car keys on the desk which proved that he was home. Or was he in the bedroom? I climbed the stairs, beaming. I couldn’t wait to tell him the news. He would be so happy. I pushed open the door to find a sight that I would never forget in my life so easily. There on the bed was Alex with another lady on him, taking off her clothes. I quickly doubled back before they could see me. I was so shocked I nearly forgot how to breathe. That was my best friend, Chloe. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Why did life have to be so cruel? Why Was it when I wanted to share some good news? “Oh Alex, I don't want to be your mistress.” I heard Chloe say. “Why don’t you be your wife? I am tired of being your mistress. Or are scared of Reyna.” Alex scoffed. “Scared? No, I am just biding my time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Soon she’ll be out of our lives.” “Good” Chloe said, and I could hear them kissing. “I love you,” she said. “I love you too”, Alex replied, and my heart shattered. I knew Alex didn’t love me and I had caught him looking at Chloe longingly before, but hearing it outrightly from his mouth was heartbreaking. Alex and I had argued a lot though he had been honest with me and told me that my friend, Chloe, was his first love, but things got steamy between us, and he had made love to me and eventually married me. Our marriage was a total disaster. We argued constantly. We insult each other. Mostly it was Alex doing the insults and the hurtful words. Other times he would come home late and demand I warm his bed. I quietly sobbed as I heard the sounds of pleasure coming from the bedroom and headed outside and sat in my car. “Come on girl, be strong. You can still find your way”, I said, and I shook my head. It was just all for nothing. I was going to lose it all. I wondered why the universe even let me and Alex meet in the first place. I regret it now. I steeled my resolve and wiped my eyes. I wasn’t going to cry for someone that didn’t deserve it. I had to be strong for myself and the baby. I wasn’t even going to tell Alex that I was pregnant. I waited till I saw Alex see Chloe off and head back to the house. I stepped down from the car and followed him to his study. He stopped and turned around, his eyes widened in surprise when he saw me. “You are home” he said, and I nodded. Red-hot anger, filling my system. Here he was, acting like I was just an annoying little insect. Well, the insect was about to leave. “Yes. I wanted to speak to you”, I said, and he scowled at me. He usually shunned me and didn’t like talking to me. All the more reason to leave. “What for?” He snapped, and I offered a small smile, no longer bothered by his outbursts. I was so sure of my decision now. “I want a divorce” I said, and he stopped. His dark eyes flickered at mine in surprise. “Divorce?” He asked in shock and I shrugged and folded my arms. “Yeah. I don’t want to be in your life anymore”, I said, and he scowled, his eyes blazing. “You are my wife. And you have no right to enforce a divorce on me” he said, dangerously, but I didn’t budge. “No I am not. I want a divorce, whether you want it or not”, I said, and he stared at me. “What’s the meaning of this? Is your monthly allowance finished or do you want a new car? Who are you to try to force me into a divorce” he said, and I let out a bitter laugh. “What’s wrong with you Alex?” I said, smiling, “Isn’t this what you always wanted?” His eyes flickered at mine nervously. “What do you mean by that” he asked, and I shook my head. “Oh please. I have known you love Chloe with all your heart. You two have been planning to get rid of me. All I am doing is handing it to you on a platter. Grant me the damn divorce” I said, and Alex folded his arms. “You are crazy” he said, and I nodded. So be it. “I heard you too today before you rolled in the sheets with her. She asked you to make her your wife, didn’t she? Just let me go and save yourself this trouble.” I said and he scowled. “You are going nowhere” he said, and I smiled, growing more confident. “Since you don’t want it to end. Then I’ll do it” I said, and he stared at me confused. “What?” “I am done being your side chick or whatever you think I am to you. Goodbye, Alex”, I said, and stormed away. I hoped I was strong enough to care for myself. And I was going to do anything to protect my baby. If only it were that easy.
