Chapter 7 Samuel's First Meeting with Gregory
After giving Gregory the medicine, Selena quickly called Samuel.
It was still early, and she thought he might not pick up or have his phone off. But to her surprise, he answered almost immediately.
Selena tried to stay composed, but her voice was heavy with emotion. "Samuel, are you free right now? My dad's condition is really bad, and he wants to see you."
She knew it was a bold request, but she just wanted to put Gregory's mind at ease.
"I'm free and will head over right now. Please wait for me, and don't worry too much. You need to take care of yourself first so you can be there for your family," Samuel reassured her.
"Okay. The ambulance I called should be arriving soon. We'll be going to Zoravia Hospital," Selena said. She had to get Gregory to the hospital no matter what.
"Alright. I'll be there soon," Samuel said before ending the call.
At that moment, he was holding an overseas video conference in his study.
This conference wasn't about Carter Group—it was for his overseas ventures. They were finalizing preparations for the bid on the base station construction in Davenia's Revi District.
Samuel stood up and spoke into his mic, "You guys keep going. I need to step out for a bit."
Isaac Hunter, the executive president, replied anxiously, "Boss, we're about to start the final bid this morning. If we don't iron out the details now, we could lose the project!"
"Then we'll lose it," Samuel said flatly.
Isaac quickly reminded him, "This project could bring in at least 700 million dollars in profit."
"Just keep discussing," Samuel replied calmly and turned off his camera.
He immediately called Simon. "Selena's dad is in critical condition. She has called an ambulance to Zoravia Hospital. Please help speed things up and arrange for an oncologist to consult. That said, don't let Selena know anyone is helping her."
…
After the cameras were turned off, Isaac, Noah Collins and Miles Morgan all appeared uneasy from overseas.
They weren't worried about the project; their concern was for Samuel.
While they always addressed Samuel as "Boss" in front of others, they were actually a tight-knit group of sworn brothers.
Isaac said with worry, "What do you think he's dealing with?"
Noah replied, "What else could it be? Didn't you hear him tell the person on the phone to wait for him? With his lovesickness, he's definitely heading to Havelle to see Olivia."
Isaac said, "How can he be so blind to Olivia's materialism?"
Miles added, "We're not in his shoes, so it's easy for us to judge. Let's not forget that they've been together for six years."
...
The sound of sirens echoed as the ambulance sped from Willow Grove to Zoravia Hospital.
Gregory couldn't bear seeing Selena so upset. Therefore, he relented and agreed to go to the hospital.
Although the doctor had given Gregory an IV drip, his face still looked pale.
In the ambulance, Selena quickly sent Samuel a message, which read, "My dad's condition isn't good. I told him you're a colleague of mine. We've known each other for two years, fallen in love and are planning to get married. Please help me with this lie. Please!"
Samuel's reply came quickly, "Okay!"
...
Samuel was driving his Chevrolet to Zoravia Hospital. Since Selena had called him early, he figured she hadn't had breakfast yet, so he stopped along the way to grab some food.
By the time he arrived at the hospital, Gregory was already settled into a room. To ease Selena's worries, Simon had arranged a standard room instead of anything special.
The nurse had already drawn blood from Gregory, and Selena learned that the hospital had arranged a routine expert consultation.
Feeling glad, Selena immediately told Gregory that he would definitely get better with the expert's help.
Gregory was still hooked up to an IV, his face pale as ever.
When Selena saw Samuel, she quickly stood up. She seemed a little worried and was about to say something, but Samuel gave her a reassuring look.
Selina nodded and showed closeness to Samuel. She said, "Samuel, you're here."
At the sound of her voice, Gregory's eyes flew open, and his condition also seemed to improve a little.
He tried to sit up, and Lucas immediately helped him.
Samuel quickly set down the breakfast and walked over. "Mr. Clarke, just lie back and rest."
"Alright," Gregory responded with difficulty.
The effort of moving had quickened his breathing. He leaned back against the headboard and caught his breath. Then, he turned to look at Samuel, who was dressed in a suit.
At that moment, Gregory couldn't help but think he looked really handsome. Additionally, his natural elegance was also as impressive as Selena's. What a perfect match for Selena!
He extended his hand to Samuel, who immediately took it.
The hand was thin and frail, showing the wear of life and the toll of illness.
"Mr. Clarke, I should have come to see you earlier," Samuel said.
Selena was afraid Gregory might notice something was amiss, so she quickly added, "Sorry, Dad. It was my fault for not letting him come."
"It's fine," Gregory replied. He knew Selena had been hurt by love before, so she would never trouble anyone over something uncertain.
