After a quick shower and some breakfast, Vanessa was off to work. It was a quick, uneventful drive and soon she was in her building. She was taken aback at the casual and brazen manner her boss had and was at a loss for words. “So, Vanessa is it”, he remarked while looking around her workspace - “I think we’ve spoken quite a bit while working from home. Are you enjoying being back in the office? I know I am really happy to be looking at YOU”. He seemed to be measuring her up and though their gaze had only briefly met, Vanessa felt compelled to look away. She stepped back and responded while looking at the floor, “Yes, Mr Vogel, it is nice to be out and about. I didn't realize how much companionship mattered till we met. Face to face interaction is the best.” Curious yet contemplative was the way he stared at her and it made Vanessa feel like there was something in the air. Seemingly oblivious to it, David hopped off her desk and smiled at her. “I’ll be holding one-on-one meetings with all my staff, just to get to know them better and to ensure that this transition back to the office is SMOOTH for all”. He’d put some stress on the word smooth she thought – but by then he had turned and walked away. Giggling, she logged in to start her work for the day. It wasn’t long after when she was called to go to the Boss’s cabin. With some trepidation, for she knew it was now or never, she entered his cabin. "You wanted to see me," she said as she stepped inside. Her voice sounded steadier than she was feeling. More than usual, she recognized the inherent hierarchy of their boss-employee relationship, which left her feeling a little intimidated. She'd never noticed before how a desk could signal who was in charge. David's powerful demeanor suited him, she thought. He was peering intensely at some documents in front of him. "Yes, I..." he began and paused momentarily as he glanced up at her. "I have some questions about the budget numbers for your latest project." Vanessa wasn't sure what she had expected, but this was an interaction she was used to at work, unlike the candor of the morning. He barely looked at her, which left her miffed. Feeling foolish at her thoughts, she quickly tried to find her composure. She sat down across her boss's desk and began to explain the spreadsheets and contract details in front of them. She was good at her job and took pride in her performance. "Great, that all makes sense now," David said eventually. "Thanks, Vanessa." "My pleasure. If there's nothing else, I think I'll leave for the day," she replied. "There was one thing," he said as she rose from her chair. "Is there anything else, Mr Vogel?" "Call me David. I'd appreciate it if you could do that Vanessa." She didn’t know why but she felt hot as he spoke to her, all smiles now that the sordid work data was sorted. He smiled at her in his charming manner and remarked “Vanessa I know I said I’ll be seeing a lot of you but I didn’t think it would be today itself. Keep up the good work, and maybe I’ll be seeing more of you”. “Thank you, uh, David” she responded, confused but politely. Pleased but a little red at this unexpected comment from David, Vanessa left his office without saying another word, certain his eyes followed her every step.
