Chapter 3 I'm Not Afraid
The sudden, unexpected scene shocked everyone. Even as the host, Nicholas couldn't help but swallow anxiously as he tentatively approached them. The leader of the men was a big, strong man with a square jaw and buzzcut. The ugly scar on his face only increased his intimidation factor.
"Hello, everyone… Are you here to join the party?" Nicholas asked carefully, shaking uncontrollably as he gulped.
Wham!
The strong man didn't answer but kicked him away, creating an uproar amongst the crowd.
"You offended someone you shouldn't have, and I'm here to teach you a lesson!" The strong man snorted and raised his right hand. Suddenly, the big group of men in black made their move. Some of them destroyed all the decorations related to the engagement into pieces, while the others surrounded the frightened thugs. In the blink of an eye, the hall was ruined and looked nothing like an engagement event.
The thugs, who were acting arrogant seconds ago, crumbled on the floor, moaning in pain. Skylar's crisis disappeared just like that. Meanwhile, Yulia and her family watched the sight with gaping jaws, unable to wrap their minds around such a turn of events. Who the hell did Nicholas offend?
"Let's go." Yulia only managed to snap back to her senses when she felt Skylar holding her hand. Since she was still dazed, she merely nodded and instinctively left the hotel with him. Before she departed, she kept looking back at the ruined event in shock and bewilderment. Although she was still disgruntled at Skylar, the thing she wanted most right now was to flee from this place.
…
Yulia hardly said a word along the way. In the end, Skylar, who was unable to bear the silence, inquired, "I heard that we have a daughter."
Yulia took a look at him and nodded. "I named her Lola Sue." While Skylar was secretly hoping that she would tell him more about the daughter he had never met before, she changed the topic instead. "You'd better leave."
"Why? He looked into her eyes.
"You can't stay in Cloudtopia anymore after offending the Wexler family. It's better if you find a safe place and lay low for a while." Even though the Wexlers were not some powerful family, it was a piece of cake for them to handle regular people.
Skylar chuckled nonchalantly. "It's alright. I don't fear them, especially if it's for your sake."
She immediately stopped in her tracks before turning to look at him gravely. "You have no idea what kind of trouble you've brought upon yourself. Besides the Wexler family, you also provoked the Sues! Do you know who the Dragon Commander is? He's going to hold his retirement ceremony in Cloudtopia and especially sent an invitation to the Sues. Do you have any idea what this means? This means that the Dragon Commander has his eyes on the Sues, and we'll become a powerful family in Cloudtopia. The Sues are not people you could offend."
The retirement ceremony was organized by the government in Skylar's honor to welcome him as well as his official retirement from his position. Ever since Skylar received news about Yulia, he decided to hold the ceremony in Cloudtopia and sent an invitation to the Sue Residence where she resided. Yvonne Sue, the eldest young lady of the Sue family was exhilarated, flaunting her good fortune in front of Yulia the past few days at every chance she got.
"You know, Yvonne was invited to attend the Commander's retirement ceremony, and she will bring good fortune to our family now. I, on the other hand… Well, I'm the black sheep of the family."
Alas, Skylar only chuckled and said, "Oh, please. That isn't impressive at all. Look, I can get as many invites as I want if I'd just say the word."
Yulia was of the opinion that he was currently in shock and had no idea what sort of nonsense he was spewing. Plus, she didn't want to listen to him bragging any more than she had to and asked bluntly, "So, do you plan to stay?"
"Of course!" Skylar nodded immediately.
Yulia raised her brow and said, "Come with me to pick her up from preschool then. You know, it's not up to me to decide. You need to pass her test before you're allowed to be her father."
"That's fair. Let's go!" Skylar exclaimed confidently.
Since he knew that she was his biological daughter, he refused to believe that they shared nothing in common.
As soon as they entered her car, Yulia said while she drove, "You know, I'd always tell my sweet Lola that her father was deployed to a far place and could only return after he had accomplished something awesome. Since you share quite the experience as him, you can tell her that when you see her later."
Hearing this warmed Skylar's heart. It turned out that Yulia had already accepted Skylar even though she refused to admit it.
Skylar was paying close attention to Yulia when she told him some of Lola's hobbies.
When they arrived at her preschool, Yulia told Skylar to wait outside while she picked Lola up.
After five minutes, Yulia led a little girl who was dressed in a similar yellow dress as her out to meet Skylar.
The little girl had slightly curly hair and looked like a radiant little angel.
Seeing her stunned Skylar.
That's my daughter! My very own biological daughter!
It seemed that Skylar felt even more guilty as he stared at them.
He knew that Yulia must have suffered a lot in the last five years.
If he never did what he did that night, with Yulia's beauty alone, she would have never been bullied by her family then.
He felt that although he did his duty by defending the Northern borders, he had wronged Yulia and her daughter.
A rush of heavy emotions washed over Skylar as he teared up.
Meanwhile, Lola was also staring at Skylar.
However, as soon as their eyes met, they somehow felt connected.
"Is he my daddy, Mommy?" Lola asked Yulia.
