Chapter 2 Marrying Into The Langford Family 2
Veronica's expression soured. She had heard about the Langford family's matter.
It was rumored that Nathaniel Langford of the Langford family had gotten into a car accident two years ago and ended up in a coma. His fiancée dumped him promptly. His grandmother, Mathilda Periwink, heard that marrying a girl who was born in mid-July would bring luck to him and possibly help him regain consciousness, so she immediately scoured the young ladies in Coldbridge to find a suitable candidate to be Nathaniel's wife.
Veronica was certain she wouldn't get picked, but that didn't stop uneasiness from spreading across her heart.
Marrying a vegetable would mean that her life was over. Besides, she already had someone whom she loved.
Seeing Veronica's grim expression, Hilary got to enjoy the rush that came with it. The rush of tormenting her enemy and that of revenge.
She took Violet's hand and went upstairs.
Richard gazed at Veronica and assured her, “Veronica, there are a lot of young ladies born in mid-July. They won't necessarily pick you. Don't worry.”
Veronica gave him a slight smile and nodded obediently. “Dad, I'm in my second year now. Next year, when I'm in my senior year, I can start accepting acting jobs!”
“It's all my fault that you ended up majoring in acting.” Richard seemed dejected.
“I love acting. Without your support, I wouldn't have realized my dream is to major in acting,” came Veronica's sincere reply.
At his daughter's understanding words, Richard's guilt heightened.
In the end, he uttered helplessly, “Hilary and Violet meant well even though they sounded harsh.”
“I know, Dad. Don't worry. I won't take their words to heart,” Veronica answered with a grin.
“I'll ask Lydia to prepare some food for you. Go take a shower now. The food will be ready soon.”
“Alright, I'll head up now!”
With that, Veronica went upstairs with her luggage in hand.
In her room, she unpacked her stuff carefully. There was a photo on her desk of a smiling lady, Richard, and a little Veronica in their arms.
The photo was taken when Veronica was five. Back then, she had a fun and carefree childhood with adoring parents. Alas, a sudden car accident took her mother's life.
Shortly after, her father remarried.
It wasn't until much later that Veronica found out that her mother got into an accident after finding out that her father had a mistress. After leaving the house in a fit of anger, she got involved in a car accident.
Later on, Hilary moved into their house. As she was pregnant, Veronica soon welcomed a sister, Violet, who was five years younger than her.
Veronica had never hated anyone. She was mature for her age as she knew her mother wouldn't come back no matter how much her hatred for that woman was.
Knock, knock!
“Come on in!” Veronica wiped her tears away and called out.
“Ms. Veronica, your meal is ready. Your father has left for work. He told me to remind you to finish your meal,” Lydia's pleasant voice sounded.
“Alright. I'll be down soon!”
Veronica wiped the frame carefully before heading down.
She had just taken her seat at the dining table when a few men strode into her house.
The men came to a stop when they saw Veronica. The leader of the team inquired politely, “Is this Richard Saville's house?”
Veronica rose to her feet and responded politely, “Yes. My father has left for work. What is this about?”
The man scanned Veronica carefully before asking, “Are you Richard Saville's daughter, Veronica Saville?”
