Chapter 6 The True And False Daughter

Once again, the room fell into silence. Roseanne turned her gaze, her eyes following the crowd's attention to land on Jeffrey. He was dressed in a light-colored shirt, paired with black trousers and matching shoes. His sleeves were rolled up slightly, revealing a black leather watch on his wrist. As Yvonne's words fell, his expression instantly cooled. Initially, Roseanne thought that him knowing Yvonne would make him her enemy, but the situation unexpectedly flipped in an instant. Why had he taken on her case? “Ms. Scott, are you instructing me on what to do?” The casual tone of his voice carried an unexpected chill, causing an inexplicable shiver to run through those present. The deceptive elegance of his appearance made everyone forget that Jeffrey had fought his way up in the world of law. His tactics and strategies were not something an ordinary person could match. Jeffrey regained his composure, striding toward Roseanne. His leather shoes echoed with a rhythmic tap-tap-tap on the ground as he moved. “Ms. Roseanne, the person who discussed the case with you over WhatsApp yesterday wasn't Mr. Grand, it was me. I'm Mr. Parker.” A flash of surprise passed through Roseanne's eyes, and her composed expression faltered for a moment. “Are you the lawyer Old Mr. Xanthos mentioned?” He nodded. “Yes.” After hearing the conversation between the two, everyone's gaze shifted in the same direction. A flash of embarrassment crossed Owen's face. He had assumed Jeffrey had taken up the case he had turned down, which left him feeling as though the latter had simply been picking up what he hadn't wanted. It would be a lie to say he wasn't secretly pleased. Unexpectedly, it was a case of mistaken identity. Even though neither of them had cast a glance his way, his cheeks were burning. Jeffrey spoke up. “Come, let's talk in my office.” Watching the man's retreating figure, Roseanne followed without hesitation. When she passed by Owen, she halted her steps. “I'm sorry, Mr. Grand, I mistook you for someone else.” Having said that, she left. Sensing the amused gazes from his colleagues, a hint of resentment toward Roseanne rose in Owen's heart. He let out a cold snort, his gaze falling on Yvonne. “Though I'd love to take on your case, Mr. Parker has already taken Ms. Roseanne's. Hence, you'll need to find another law firm.” A dark look passed over Yvonne's eyes. She had expected this journey to be smooth sailing, but unexpectedly, Roseanne had taken a backdoor approach. “They mentioned Old Mr. Xanthos earlier. Does Roseanne know him?” Brandon frowned and replied, “I'm not sure either. With Jeffrey helping her, our battle just got harder.” Yvonne stood tall, her voice steady and confident as she declared, “I have no idea how Roseanne managed to get involved with Old Mr. Xanthos and even had Mr. Parker take on her case. Regardless, we must win and return this money to the people.” Her voice was filled with righteousness, captivating everyone present. A lawyer intern wore a look of surprise. “Everyone says Mr. Parker is famously just, so how could he assist a scammer?” A colleague replied, “Wasn't it said to be a task entrusted by Old Mr. Xanthos? Mr. Parker must have felt compelled to take on her case.” “Five hundred million is equivalent to the lifelong savings of countless families. How on earth did she manage to do that?” No one would believe that an ordinary woman could amass a fortune of five hundred million. Other than committing fraud or winning the lottery, they couldn't conceive of any other ways. However, in recent years, no one had actually won such a large sum. The lawyer intern idolized Jeffrey and had specifically come to intern at Triumpus Advocates because of him. However, after this incident, his worldview was shaken. All of this was because Roseanne had somehow gotten Arthur to ask Jeffrey for help. The young man glared resentfully at the office door. Jeffrey's office was filled with silence, the two of them not exchanging a single word. The quiet was so profound that the only sound to be heard was the soft rustling of turning pages. After an indeterminate amount of time, Jeffrey set down the documents he was holding and cast his gaze toward the woman on the couch. “Ms. Roseanne?” Roseanne, who had been lost in thought, withdrew her gaze from the window. “I'm sorry, please continue.” Jeffrey held a prenuptial agreement in his hand, pausing for a moment before saying, “This prenuptial agreement is not in your favor. It's legally binding, and even if Brandon had been unfaithful, you don't stand to gain anything.” She had everything prepared, even evidence of Brandon's infidelity. Having been in the profession for many years, he had handled numerous divorce cases. However, this was the first time he encountered someone like her, who didn't gain any advantage but rather ended up paying a few hundred million. “I couldn't care less about his assets. My sole aim is a successful divorce while retaining my shares. Of course, the ideal scenario would be him handing over 1.5 billion directly to me. After all, the decline of Graham Group is imminent, and the shares are bound to depreciate.” Her eyes were calm and undisturbed, devoid of any anger toward her husband's infidelity. There was no disappointment from not receiving a share of the assets, nor was there despair from the betrayal. It was as if this lawsuit was nothing more than an insignificant matter to her. Had he not met her in person but assumed solely based on this prenuptial agreement, Jeffrey would have believed that Roseanne was madly in love with Brandon. Seeing her demeanor at that moment, however, it seemed like he was wrong. Jeffrey followed the procedure. “Negotiating privately is usually the most effective and conservative approach. However, given the current situation, we have no choice but to proceed legally.” He pulled out a contract from the drawer and placed it in front of her, then turned the black pen around. “Ms. Roseanne, sign this power of attorney agreement. After that, I will handle all the specific matters with the opposing lawyer on your behalf.” Without any hesitation, Roseanne picked up the pen and signed her name. “Ms. Roseanne, aren't you going to take a serious look through it?” She looked up. “You're the lawyer Old Mr. Xanthos recommended, so I trust you. But Mr. Parker, aren't you curious where my money came from?” Jeffrey gave a gentle smile. “No matter where it came from, it won't affect the outcome of the lawsuit. Most people tend to believe what they see on the surface and don't scrutinize what's beneath. As long as your conscience is free, that's all that matters.” Two years ago, the scandal involving the true and false daughter of the Sylvester family had caused quite a stir, unveiling secrets that had been hidden for twenty years. When Burton Sylvester was inspecting a site, he unexpectedly encountered a mudslide and his whereabouts became unknown. Ignoring all objections, Claire Davidson set out to find him. During her journey, she went into premature labor. The situation was dire, so she was rushed to the nearest county hospital where she gave birth to a girl. After the rain ceased, Burton was rescued and admitted into the same hospital. The Sylvester family believed that the baby girl had brought them good fortune and lavished her with love, naming her Aurora. Twenty years later, an unexpected incident led the Sylvester family to discover that Aurora was not related to them by blood. Stunned by this revelation, they sent people to investigate. It turned out that back then, they had mistakenly taken the wrong daughter from a village woman. The Sylvester family immediately brought back their biological daughter and renamed her Roseanne. In less than a month, Roseanne had already tied the knot with the heir of Graham Group, while Aurora continued to be nurtured in the Sylvester family, remaining the much-adored darling of the Sylvester family. Jeffrey had never questioned the origins of Roseanne's five hundred million. The fact that she was able to revive Graham Group from the brink of collapse and establish a firm footing in the business world was testament enough to her capabilities. For someone like her, earning five hundred million was undoubtedly within reach. After Roseanne exited the law firm, her phone began to vibrate. The screen lit up, revealing the caller to be her mother, Claire. She pondered for a couple of seconds before answering the call. A woman's gentle voice came through the phone. “Rosie, are you and Brandon getting a divorce?” Roseanne responded, “Yes.” “Would it be convenient for you to return home now?” The woman's voice held a hint of uncertainty. Roseanne once again answered succinctly, “All right.”
