The door creaked open with a sharp, grating sound, like an omen of something terrible. The room was dimly lit; the only light came from an old bedside lamp, its yellow glow barely illuminating the corner of the bed. The stench of medicine was sharp and overwhelming, and the air was so damp it felt hard to breathe.
Teresa lay on the bed with her eyes closed, her face pale as paper. She looked so thin she seemed to be nothing but skin stretched over bone.
