Theresa's intuition proved spot on. She could claim uninhabited areas—or even previously occupied ones—under one condition: the land had to be cleared and surveyed either by her or her dogs. That day, she walked with her dogs from the camp to the spot where she'd planted her marker, a modest five-acre stretch. Following their exploration, she marked the paths they'd traveled.
