Chapter 1
Lorraine Turner stared at the big red wedding characters in her new home, feeling like she was in a dream.
Just like that, she had just married the heir of the powerful Mercer family in Amber City, Dawson Mercer.
Just a month ago, Sienna Gregory had been bragging to her about becoming Amber City's top socialite, making every woman in the city jealous to tears.
But life was unpredictable. A week ago, Dawson was in a car accident and lost his sight.
The Gregory family did not want to offend the Mercer family, so the wedding went on as planned.
Only the bride was switched to the Gregory family's secretly adopted orphan of four years, who was Lorraine.
The sound of the door opening made her tense up instantly. She looked toward the entrance as the man walked in.
For a moment, she held her breath...
Dawson had already changed out of the heavy wedding suit and was now wearing a simple white shirt and black trousers.
His appearance had always been a mystery in Amber City. Some said he looked like a terrifying king of hell.
While others claimed he was unparalleled, a breathtaking sight.
Lorraine looked at his impossibly refined features and did not even dare to breathe too loudly.
"I'll help you," she offered softly.
She knew he could not see and had to feel his way around, so Lorraine slowly stood up.
"No need." His tone was far from friendly.
He stood about three meters away from Lorraine, his face cold as ice.
"The Gregory family sure knows how to play their cards. Now that I'm blind, they threw you in as cannon fodder."
Lorraine felt a little guilty. She lowered her head and stayed silent, the bright red wedding dress on her body feeling like the biggest joke.
It wasn't like she wanted this either, but the Gregory family had morally blackmailed her with their four years of raising her. She had no way out.
"Actually, you didn't want this either, right?" The man's tone suddenly shifted.
Lorraine instinctively looked up. "That's true, I didn't want this, but I had no choice."
Dawson let out a cold laugh, "Not bad, at least you're honest and willing to tell the truth.
"But it doesn't matter. Whether it's you or Sienna, the result would be the same."
Dawson and Sienna's marriage was originally just an alliance between the Mercer family and the Gregory family. There was never any real affection involved.
Sienna did have some looks, but unfortunately, Dawson was never a man who cared about appearances.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Lorraine," she answered softly.
"How long have you been in the Gregory family?"
"Four years."
"Why did the Gregory family adopt you?"
Faced with this question, Lorraine hesitated for a moment and decided to tell the truth.
Because she knew that people from these powerful families had connections and could easily find out anything they wanted to know.
"Because my grandfather once saved Sienna's grandfather's life. He promised my grandfather that his grandson would marry me."
"Oh, so you're Caleb Gregory's fiancée. Does Caleb really want to let you marry over here?" Dawson sneered.
"Caleb never liked me. I know my place," she said calmly.
"How old are you?"
Maybe standing for too long was tiring, because Dawson felt his way to the couch in the master bedroom and sat down casually.
"I'm 22."
"Still in school?" he inquired.
After hesitating for a long time, Lorraine slowly replied, "I've never been to school."
"What? Never? Don't tell me you didn't even go to kindergarten."
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Lorraine fiddled with the hem of her dress. "No, I didn't."
"Haha, interesting, really interesting." This actually surprised Dawson.
"I never expected that my wife would be an illiterate woman. Now that's funny."
His mocking tone made Lorraine unable to sit still any longer. She got up, took a deep breath, and said, "You don't have to be so sarcastic. I'm only marrying you because the Gregory family decided so. And your family didn't object to the switch either, did they? After all, there's still someone willing to marry a blind person like you, isn't there?
"Also, if you're not satisfied with me, we can get divorced anytime. Just write up the divorce agreement now, and I'll leave immediately."
"Do you think you have a way out?" He frowned slightly.
"Do you think you still have a choice?" Lorraine shot back, standing her ground with surprising confidence.
For a moment, the room fell into silence, the air thick with tension.
Finally, Dawson let out a cold laugh.
"Not highly educated, but have a sharp tongue."
Lorraine remained silent. Truthfully, if she had not been trapped in the Gregory family for four years, she would never have agreed to this marriage so easily. Just as the man said, did she have a way out? Of course, she did. It was just that now wasn't the right time because she hadn't found what she was looking for yet.
"Tonight, you sleep on the bed. I'll take the sofa." His tone was commanding and disdainful, but at least he showed some gentlemanly manners.
"No need, this is your home. I'll sleep on the sofa." Lorraine slowly stood up, the golden headpiece on her hair jingling softly.
"Whatever. I'm going to take a shower." The man felt his way up.
After hesitating for a moment, Lorraine reluctantly asked, "Do you need help?"
She thought about how the man in front of her was blind and couldn't see anything.
But he heard it differently.
"Oh? Sure... how would you like to help?" His playful tone made it clear he was messing with her.
Sure enough, Lorraine's face instantly flushed red, but luckily, he couldn't see it.
"I'm just worried you might fall in the bathroom. If something happens to you, I'd be held responsible. Don't get the wrong idea."
"Then will you help wash me yourself?" he continued teasing.
"If you don't mind, I certainly can." She stood her ground.
"OK, then come in."
She hadn't expected him to agree so easily. Lorraine was suddenly stunned, not knowing what to do.
"If you're regretting it, there's still time to back out."
Hearing the hesitation in her breath, Dawson chuckled. This woman was interesting. She was trying to save face but was too afraid to step inside.
"Regret? What's there to regret? It's just a bath. Not like you're going to eat me."
Lorraine was a quiet person who did not talk much, but she had a stubborn personality. Her grandfather had scolded her many times for this since she was young.
It was just helping him take a bath. What was there to be afraid of? It was not like he was going to eat her!
With that thought in mind, Lorraine followed him into the bathroom, leaving the door slightly ajar out of caution.
"Will you help me undress, or should I do it myself?"
Dawson's question immediately made Lorraine embarrassed again.
She realized that this man was doing it on purpose, deliberately teasing her.
Taking a deep breath, she coldly questioned, "Mr. Mercer, I believe you're just blind, not disabled, right?"
"Fair point. I'll do it myself." With that, the man directly removed his outer coat and the inner lining.
In an instant, he revealed a well-defined physique with eight-pack abs...
Lorraine immediately turned her head away, her fair face flushing once again.
Noticing her embarrassment, the man curled his thin lips in amusement.
"Just adjust the water temperature for me, and then you can leave."
Asking her to help him bathe was already a mischievous act.
Dawson had been single for years and had no interest in women. He had no intention of actually keeping her here.
Hearing this, Lorraine felt immensely relieved and quickly turned around, bending over near the bathtub to adjust the water valve and temperature.
In her rush, she accidentally brushed against his foot as he stepped into the tub. With a loud splash, they both tumbled into the bathtub together!
He was below, and she was on top, her body pressed against his, her palm firmly resting on his chest...
Feeling the smooth skin beneath her finger and the slightly hard bumps, Lorraine, who had no experience, was momentarily stunned and didn't know what to do.
"Mr. Mercer, your mother asked me to bring some soup..."
A maid carrying a pack of soup had just reached the bathroom door when she witnessed the scene inside. Her jaw dropped in shock.
"Ah! Mr. Mercer! Mrs. Mercer! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to intrude!"
The maid was so frightened that she put the soup on the coffee table and ran away.
The two were left in an even more awkward situation.
"How much longer are you planning to hold onto me?" Dawson raised a brow, his tone laced with mockery. "Didn't you say you didn't want to marry me? What's this? Changed your mind after seeing me and got tempted?"
Lorraine rolled her eyes. "Tsk! Don't flatter yourself! Sure, you've got a decent body, but who knows if it's all just for show?"
With that, she tried to pull her hand away.
But before she could, he grabbed her wrist. "You're the first person who's dared to mock me. Interesting. Want me to prove to you right now whether I'm 'just for show'?"
"You, let me go! Huh?"
In the midst of her struggle, Lorraine's fingers brushed against his arm.
"Dawson, are you sure your blindness was caused by the car accident?" Lorraine frowned.
Dawson was no fool. Catching the suspicion in her tone, his eyelid twitched. "What do you mean by that?"
