Chapter 14 An Ugly Freak
Matthew was fond of women like Lillian.
Upon hearing his words, Lillian was filled with a rush of excitement and anticipation. The past few days had been tough on her, her face marred by a painful injury. If it left a scar, she would be an ugly freak. It was a thought she found distressing. She feared that Howard would certainly find her less appealing then.
She simply couldn't be without Howard.
“Dr. Lynch, can you really heal the scar on my face?” she asked.
“Miss, don't worry. This injury on your face might seem incurable to those quack doctors, but it's a piece of cake for me. A single needle from me will heal you completely, and I promise there won't be any scars left! However, I don't have my medical kit with me. The injury on your face can't wait any longer. It needs to be stitched up as soon as possible. So, my advice is for you to come with me right away!” Matthew uttered.
“All right! Dr. Lynch, I can't thank you enough!”
Lillian was nearly driven to despair because of the scar on her face. She couldn't wait any longer, and thus, she completely missed the hidden implications in Matthew's words. However, Benedict, who was standing aside, understood everything clearly. From the beginning, he had no intention of letting Howard marry Lillian.
There was a significant disparity in power between the Yandolf and Zulker families, and Benedict found out that Lillian was the reason Howard had ended up in that state.
As the head of the Zulker family, Benedict had encountered countless individuals. From the moment he first saw Matthew, he understood his intentions. Seeing that Matthew was interested in Lillian, it was only natural for Benedict to cater to his wishes.
Thus, Benedict said to Lillian, “Lillian, you should thank Dr. Lynch promptly. So, hurry up and go with him. Make sure to express your gratitude to Dr. Lynch!”
“Mr. Benedict, don't worry. I'll do just that!”
Soon after, Lillian left the hospital with Matthew, getting into Benedict's car.
In the hospital, after Lillian and Matthew had left for a while, Howard woke up.
“Dad, are my legs beyond recovery? Will I have to use a wheelchair from now on? I-I refuse to be in a wheelchair! I want Norton dead! Dad, go and kill him! Kill him!”
Upon awakening, Howard was gripped by panic, fear consuming him. He wasn't scared of Norton, though. He was scared of the prospect of spending the rest of his life confined to a wheelchair.
Benedict, watching his good-for-nothing son, felt a surge of anger rising from deep within his heart.
“Shut up! You can't even handle a single Norton. How can you expect me to entrust the Zulker family to you? Huh?”
With a single roar from Benedict, Howard was instantly silenced.
Howard wasn't particularly skilled, but his ambitions were towering. If he couldn't become the head of the Zulker family in the future, he would question what meaning his life held.
“Dad, I know I messed up. I never thought that b*stard, Norton, would actually dare to break my legs, let alone that he could fight so well. Dad, doesn't our family have even more skilled bodyguards? Could you send them to get revenge for me? By the way, today is the deadline that punk has set,” Howard said.
“What deadline?” Benedict asked, and Howard, not daring to hide anything, immediately revealed Norton's request.
“Heh! What an ignorant punk! Does he really think the Zulker family is easy to bully? Such audacity for a mere ant!” Benedict was livid, ready to personally claim Norton's life, when he suddenly remembered the words of his younger brother, Nathan. He held back his anger, adopting a calmer tone as he said to Howard, “Howie, don't worry. You are my son and the future head of the Zulker family. I will avenge you, but we must be patient! The miracle doctor, Dr. Lynch, from Longburg has already examined your legs. He promised me that he'll get you back on your feet. Stay put in the hospital for the next few days. By the way, as for that woman, Lillian, it's high time you cut ties with her!”
After speaking, Benedict turned to leave, but Howard quickly stopped him, asking, “Dad, what are you talking about? My love for Lily is real, and I want to marry her. Didn't you already agree to that? In just a few days, I'm set to marry her. Uncle Nathan has promised me that War Goddess White Swan will be my wedding witness! You and Uncle Nathan mustn't go back on your word. By the way, where's Lily?”
Ignoring Howard, Benedict headed straight out of the ward.
Meanwhile, Lillian was curled up on the bed, clutching the blanket tightly around her body, her tears flowing incessantly. She didn't know what kind of medicine Matthew had given her. All she knew was that after taking the medicine, she felt like she had become a different person. Afterward, something happened.
“Dr. Lynch, what exactly was the medicine you gave me earlier? Why has this happened? What's going on? I've let Howie down! I've failed him!” Lillian buried her head and cried bitterly.
Meanwhile, Matthew, who was sitting next to her, finished his cigarette and leaned over her again, wearing a wicked grin. “What else could it be? Of course, it was that kind of medicine.”
“What? Y-You b*stard!”
Lillian slapped Matthew across the face, pushing him away as she tried to escape. However, Matthew saw that coming, and he quickly grabbed her by the hair and yanked her back.
“What's wrong? Don't you want me to heal the scar on your face anymore? You need to understand that I'm hired by the Zulker family to treat Howard's legs, not you. Even though you are his fiancée, I'm under no obligation to treat you! Tell me something. If the injury on your face doesn't heal properly or leave scars, do you think Howard would still marry you?”
Matthew's words left Lillian momentarily stunned, but she also snapped back to reality in an instant.
“Judging from your earlier fervor, I know Howard is a good-for-nothing. You're a smart woman, so I believe you'll definitely make the right choice!”
With that, Matthew waited for Lillian to throw herself at him.
Sure enough, after pondering for just over a minute, Lillian willingly leaned into Matthew's embrace.
Meanwhile, over at Lucille Clinic, Norton had already made seven Core Building Pills. Ten Core Building Pills were required to reconstruct Lucille's three meridians and seven vessels. He was still three pills short, but he needed to rest.
Refining pills required a significant drain of vital energy. Even though his cultivation level had reached the legendary stage spoken of in tales, the prolonged expenditure of his vital energy had left him utterly exhausted.
Norton's energy then fully recovered after he took two hours of meditative rest. By this time, Suzanne, Harlan, and Martha had finished all the preparations at the clinic, leaving only the medicines to be arranged. After that, they would be ready for the grand opening.
When Norton arrived at the clinic's reception counter, he didn't even have the chance to talk to Harlan before he saw a familiar face that made him extremely nauseous.
The face he saw belonged to Melanie Carter, Lillian's mother.
“Well, Norton, you spent five years in reformative imprisonment, but it seems like you haven't improved at all! Right after you've been released, you've already injured Lillian, as well as my future son-in-law, Mr. Zulker. As if that wasn't bad enough, you have the audacity to try and swindle five million from Lillian and Mr. Zulker? How dare you? Listen to me carefully. You have only one path to take right now. Immediately come with me to see Lillian and Mr. Zulker. You will kneel before them, apologize, and then cripple yourself! For Lillian's sake, I'll plead your case to the head of the Zulker family Otherwise, your entire family is doomed!” Melanie said.
“Mr. Qualls, who is this foolish and ugly old hag?”
Before Norton had a chance to speak, Suzanne abruptly jumped up and bounded over to his side. Silently, Harlan stood up and led Martha into the back room.
“Nort has grown up, and he can handle his own affairs. Moreover, Ms. Suzanne's background is not to be taken lightly. In the future, she and Nort will deal with their own matters with others. You should not interfere or even comment!” Harlan said to Martha.
“How is he going to deal solve the issue? What kind of father are you? Don't you know how he got in there five years ago? Hurry up and lend a hand. Melanie is nothing but a shrew. Besides, since Lillian has gotten involved with Howard, the Yandolf family's influence has surged! This time, Nort is in trouble!”
Martha was on the brink of tears, overwhelmed with anxiety. However, just at that moment, she suddenly felt a pinch at the back of her neck. After that, she lost consciousness.
Over at the reception counter, Suzanne's words had infuriated Melanie to the point where she felt like her lungs were about to explode.
