Chapter 13 Accepting A Disciple
Norton was neither short of money nor lacking in power, so he could never accept Emily's decision.
Seeing his calm and resolute demeanor, Emily finally realized that she had been too abrupt. She also realized that a man of Norton's stature surely wouldn't be lacking in wealth. He surely wouldn't be fazed by the modest wealth of the Weiss family.
“Nort, I apologize if I was too forward,” Emily said. “However, you saved my life. You're a benefactor to me and the entire Weiss family. If there's ever anything you need from me in the future, please don't hesitate to ask!”
“Old Mdm. Weiss, please don't get the wrong idea. I'm a laid-back person. This clinic of mine is more than enough for me!”
“All right, Nort. Your clinic seems to be nearly set up. When do you plan to open? By then, will I have the honor of sharing a drink with you?” Emily was determined to foster a good relationship with Norton. The opening of Norton's clinic presented an opportunity for her to repay him, an opportunity she did not want to miss.
“Old Mdm. Weiss, of course. I will notify you when the time comes. It would be my honor to have you there. However, Old Mdm. Weiss, perhaps we should let Ms. Suzanne get up first!” Though Norton didn't particularly like Suzanne, he couldn't bear to see her, a living, breathing person, kneeling outside his clinic.
“All right! I'll listen to you!”
Emily rose to his feet and approached Suzanne, her tone stern. “Missy, listen to me carefully. Nort is the Weiss family's savior. From now on, you should respect him as you respect me! If you disrespect Nort again, I'll kick you out of the Weiss family, and I mean what I say!”
Suzanne was sobbing when she replied, “Grandma, I was wrong. I promise I won't do it again!”
“Mr. Qualls, I'm sorry!” Suzanne said to Norton.
Suzanne was sobbing uncontrollably. Just as she was about to bow down to Norton in apology, he reached out, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her to her feet.
“Ms. Suzanne, there's no need for formalities. All I ask is for you not to see me as a villain anymore! Also, try not to upset your grandma again!”
“Thank you, Mr. Qualls. I acknowledge my mistake, and I hope you could grant me a chance to make amends. Additionally, I wish to join your clinic and learn medicine under your mentorship. Is that possible?”
This time, Suzanne truly acknowledged her mistake due to the pill that Norton had given Emily. Emily had been stuck at the stage of a Grandmaster for over twenty years. Prior to that, in her sixties, Emily had originally thought she would never have the opportunity to progress beyond that stage in her lifetime.
At that moment, however, all because of a single pill given by Norton, Emily had leaped from being a Grandmaster to becoming a Supreme Grandmaster overnight.
Suzanne, being part of a prominent family and the successor groomed by Emily, was well aware of the significance a Supreme Grandmaster could have on the Weiss family. Despite their immense wealth being the greatest in Yarburn, the Weiss family had always lagged behind the mayor's family in combat arts.
With Emily, a Supreme Grandmaster, in the Weiss family, they could stand on equal footing with the mayor's family in the future.
Upon hearing Suzanne's words, Emily felt greatly comforted.
“Do you want to learn medical skills?” Norton was somewhat taken aback. He hadn't anticipated that Suzanne would harbor such thoughts.
“Yes, Mr. Qualls. Would you consider taking me as your disciple?”
Suzanne was utterly respectful, filled with anticipation. Emily felt the same way.
However, Norton went on to refuse to accept her as his disciple, saying, “Ms. Suzanne, I'm sorry, but I can't accept you as a disciple. My medical skills are too advanced for you to learn at the moment. However, if you're willing, you could work at my clinic in the future. I'd be happy to teach you some basic acupuncture!”
“Thank you, Mr. Qualls!”
Suzanne felt disappointed that Norton refused to accept her as his disciple, but she didn't dare to ask for more. She immediately bowed respectfully to express her gratitude. Emily also kept thanking Norton. In her eyes, as long as Suzanne could work in the clinic, it would mean that the entire Weiss family would be associated with Norton.
From the moment Norton cured her illness, the idea of betrothing Suzanne to him had already formed in her mind. However, she was well aware that Norton held no affection for Suzanne. Coupled with Suzanne's repeated disrespect toward Norton, she dared not express her intentions to him.
Fortunately, Suzanne was quite savvy. She took the initiative to propose becoming Norton's disciple and working in his clinic.
Though Norton had refused to accept Suzanne as a disciple, as long as she could work in his clinic, she would have more time to spend with him in the future. Emily was confident that Suzanne would strive to change the unfavorable impression she had left on Norton. Moreover, she firmly believed that Suzanne could learn much more from Norton, things she herself couldn't teach.
“Nort, I'm afraid I have to trouble you again. Suzanne lost her mother at a young age, and it was me who raised her single-handedly. I admit that I may have spoiled her a bit, but rest assured, she's very bright and a quick learner!” Emily was overjoyed.
“All right. From now on, Ms. Suzanne will start as my assistant. Once she's qualified, I'll teach her the basics of acupuncture.”
“All right! Nort, thank you so much. I'm entrusting Suzanne to you. She will be living with you from now on!” Emily said.
After that, she turned to Suzanne and said, “Missy, listen well. From now on, you are not to return home without my permission. I'm going back to fetch your clothes!”
With that, Emily hopped into the car and drove off joyfully.
Confusion washed over Norton as he felt as though he had been outsmarted.
At that moment, Harlan approached Norton, watching Suzanne, who was chatting with Martha while working, and asked, “Your girlfriend?”
“Dad, she's not my girlfriend. I'm not into someone like her. I already have a girlfriend!”
When Norton agreed to let Suzanne work at his clinic and teach her some basic acupuncture, it was entirely out of respect for Emily. He didn't particularly like Suzanne.
“Oh... When are you bringing your girlfriend back?” Harlan asked.
“In a while more. She's not in Yarburn right now!” Norton had already planned to introduce Lucille to his parents once she returned.
“All right. Go ahead and attend to your matters. There's not much left to do. Your mother, Suzanne, and I can handle the rest! By the way, I think Ms. Suzanne is quite impressive!”
After Harlan finished speaking, he continued with his tasks. Norton didn't say much and went into the storeroom to start making pills for Lucille. The necessary medicinal herbs had already been arranged. After making that phone call, it took less than half a day for someone to personally deliver them into his hands.
“Lucy, once you return, I'll have a surprise waiting for you!” Norton muttered to himself.
In his heart, Norton was sweetly consumed by thoughts of Lucille, eagerly anticipating her swift return.
Meanwhile, some people had arrived in Howard's ward at the hospital.
Benedict personally went to the airport to pick up the miracle doctor, Matthew Lynch, who had arrived from Longburg.
“Mr. Benedict, rest assured, I can treat Mr. Howard's legs. However, it will take some time, and also—”
“Dr. Lynch, don't worry. I understand!” Benedict pulled out a bank card and handed it to Matthew, stating, “Dr. Lynch, this card holds thirty million. I need you to do your best to heal my son's legs as soon as possible. Please, let me know if there's anything else you need.”
Matthew's eyes lit up instantly when he saw the bank card and heard it contained thirty million. Still, he maintained an image of a compassionate doctor and said, “Mr. Benedict, you're too kind. As a doctor, it's my duty to heal and save lives. Rest assured, within three days, I can have Mr. Howard on his feet! However, we can't delay treating this young lady's facial injury any longer. Otherwise, even if it heals, it's going to leave a scar!”
Matthew honestly slipped the bank card into his pocket, his gaze greedily shifting onto Lillian, who was nearby. Sinister thoughts began to stir within him.
As soon as he entered, his attention was immediately drawn to Lillian. Despite the injury on Lillian's face, her figure was incredibly attractive.
