"…"Wynter's remarks surprised Gary, who was still impressionable and immature. His eyes strayed as though they were going to turn on him. Fanny stepped in right away and said, "He's just trying to act tough." He insisted on coming out even though he wasn't fully cured. UPH hasn't finished. It was true that Gary had a cold. "I've missed you," he remarked in a scratchy voice. "All right, let's go inside," Dickson said. "We'll let Wynter sample some of our homemade food." With deft timing, the couple led Wynter inside the house.
It was a multigenerational home inside. Dickson presented each of them individually: cousins-in-law, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. With the exception of the young cousin-in-law, who was only a few years older than Wynter, everyone else appeared to be rather normal. She was unkempt and carrying a youngster in her arms, her face blank. Before she eventually regained her composure, Wynter called out to her cousin-in-law a few times. “Oh, hello,” she said without a hint of a country accent. Wynter teased, "You're not a local, are you?" as she peered at the inside of her cousin-in-law's forearm.
