Chapter 9 She's Fierce
As both sides refused to budge, the frustration that had been building up in Warren's heart gradually weighed on his chest, causing him pain. Seriously, how did I never notice before that she could cry so well?! He clenched his jaw, reached into his suit pocket, and took out a handkerchief.
Reluctantly, he turned his head away and handed it over. "You look disheveled. Clean your face. I still have a bunch of documents to read later. If you keep dilly-dallying, I won't care about you anymore!"
…
He waited for a long time, but no one took the handkerchief from him. He turned his head in displeasure, only to see the empty space in front of him. There was no sign of Skye anymore. She actually left him standing there like a fool!
Ethan, noticing his boss' confusion, kindly approached and reminded him, "Mr. Whitley, Miss Crawford has left."
Warren glared at him with a stern face. "I'm not blind!"
Speechless, Ethan timidly stepped back, maintaining a safe distance from the man who could explode at any moment.
"What an ingrate." Warren turned around, unable to contain his temper. He threw the handkerchief at Ethan, saying sternly, "Go home!"
Ethan trembled and bent down, following the man into the car.
After the Maybach had moved some distance, Ethan looked at the rearview mirror and hesitantly whispered, "Mr. Whitley, our men have taken Scott back to Goodwill Apartment. When Miss Crawford returns and finds her brother missing, she will definitely come to us. The buses aren't running at this hour, and she probably doesn't have enough money for a cab—"
"What do you mean?" Warren exuded coldness from the inside out like an ice sculpture. "Do you want me to chase after her and beg her to come back with me again?"
Ethan gritted his teeth and said, "Miss Crawford seemed to have injured her leg. I saw her struggling to walk when she left just now."
Warren was lost for words. His expression softened a bit, and the image of Skye being humiliated by Michael and others during the day came to his mind. That was when she got hurt, right? Ah, what a pain in the *ss! His chest heaved up and down twice, and he ordered in a deep voice, "Turn around."
Ethan quickly turned the steering wheel and headed back. He had just casually tested the waters with his words, wanting to see how Warren would treat Skye now. He wanted to observe his reactions for future reference. However, he didn't expect the man actually to go back to pick her up! It seems that Miss Crawford's position in Mr. Whitley's heart has significantly changed. From now on, I'll show more respect toward her.
…
"Rosie, what happened today was an accident. Please don't kick me out. Give me another chance. I promise I won't cause any trouble in the future."
"Cut that bullsh*t. Get out of my face!" Rosie waved her hand in disgust and threw Skye out before tossing a 20-dollar bill to her. "Drunken M has been running smoothly since it started business on this street nearly eight years ago, but as soon as you came, the Vice Squad targeted us and shut us down. What bad luck! Now, hurry up and leave!"
"I'm sorry, but Rosie, I'm begging you—"
Rosie slammed the door shut, cursed at Skye through the glass door, and went upstairs.
Skye stood in front of the store, holding the 20-dollar bill, feeling lost and confused. She had lost her place to stay… What should she do from now on?
Beep!
The honking of a car interrupted Skye's thoughts, and she turned around slowly.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
A Maybach with hazard lights on was parked by the side of the street, urging her once again.
Sparks of anger flashed in Skye's eyes as she clenched the bill and walked over, holding her breath. She opened the rear passenger door and got in. Looking at the dignified man sitting there, she trembled all over and asked with red eyes, "Warren, what do you want to do?!" She didn't believe his excuse about being afraid of being reported by the media. If he were afraid of public opinion, he wouldn't have left her at their wedding to find Matilda back then.
Warren casually threw a set of keys onto her legs, looked straight ahead, and said without even sparing her a glance, "I'm about to sign a 20-billion deal with the LA Group from abroad. We're currently going through the contract procedures, and I can't afford any accidents during this period." He added, "Seven days. You and your brother will stay in my apartment for seven days, and after that, you can go wherever you want and work as a bar hostess wherever you want. No one will bother you!"
The LA Group was a foreign technology company and a giant in the industry. Before she married Warren, he had already intended to collaborate with them, but at that time, Warren had just taken over the Whitleys and was too young. Consequently, the company was hesitant and didn't agree. After four years, he finally secured the contract.
No wonder… How laughable. For a moment, she actually thought that he cared about her, but it turned out that her presence was tied to his interests. After all, the chairman of the LA Group loved his wife very much. If he found out about Warren and her, he would definitely question Warren's character, and it might affect the progress of the contract signing.
She lowered her head in silence. Seven days… I don't have to worry about food and shelter, which is good.
Warren felt a little uncomfortable with the sudden silence. He glanced at her from the corner of his eye, wanting to see if she was secretly shedding tears again. Coincidentally, Skye raised her head at this moment, and their eyes met by accident.
Warren changed from sneaking glances to openly looking at her. He cleared his throat and said in a serious tone, "If it weren't for the circumstances, I would never let you stay in my apartment. After seven days, I hope you can leave voluntarily. Also, don't have any more fantasies about me. I can never like you."
In the past, when Skye heard these words, she would painfully ask the man what was wrong with her. Now, not only did she feel nothing deep down, she even felt like laughing. "Mr. Whitley, please rest assured. The Skye who used to love you unconditionally has already died in prison. From now on, even if I lose my mind or am off my head, I'll remain absolutely sober and determined not to get attracted to you in the slightest."
If this conversation had taken place four years ago, Warren would have felt relieved. However, now he felt inexplicably irritated. He turned his head to look out the window and calmly replied, "You'd better be."
"I swear on the souls of my parents. If I break this oath, I will suffer a fate worse than death."
Warren was left speechless. Perhaps her oath was too harsh, but as he looked at his reflection in the car window, his Adam's apple bobbed up and down twice.
They remained silent throughout the journey.
When they arrived at Goodwill Apartment, Skye got out of the car alone, while Warren asked Ethan to take him to the company.
At first, Skye was anxious about living under the same roof with the man for seven days. She had even worried about the possibility of Matilda spending the night with him.
However, it seemed that her worries were unfounded. For six consecutive days after moving in, she hadn't seen Warren at all. He must have been staying at Matilda's house. But that's not my concern.
Over these six days, she had been using her phone to browse job recruitment information on various apps. Many of her job applications had been rejected, but sending job applications to many companies at once had proven effective. Currently, she had successfully arranged a job interview with a domestic service company at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and another one with a jewelry company at 1 p.m.
She wasn't very confident about the job interview with the jewelry company, but she felt optimistic about the domestic service company. "It will be fine." She held her notebook and smiled, encouraging herself. "If I work hard in the future, everything I want will gradually come true. I shouldn't rush. Let's take it step by step." As she spoke, she glanced back at Scott, who was happily playing with the kitten by the floor-to-ceiling window.
"Meow!" The kitten suddenly looked at her and let out a soft meow as if seeking attention.
Skye's eyes crinkled in a smile. How adorable. It doesn't look like a pet that Warren would keep.
…
"Warren, what's going on? I heard that you've been sleeping at the office for six consecutive days. The collaboration with the LA Group is already finalized, so why are you pushing yourself so hard? Won't you leave any room for others?" Kai said while entering the man's office.
Who would choose to sleep at the office every day when they could go home? Faced with work, no matter if he was awake or asleep, Warren often felt like he was on the verge of collapse. The sound of the pen signing on the documents filled the air, and without lifting his head, he said, "What's the matter? I have a meeting in half an hour."
Kai frowned and walked up to snatch the pen from Warren's hand. He then sat down opposite him, unbuttoning his suit with one hand. "I'll tell you what, I sent my younger brother abroad." Liam was the illegitimate child of the Hudson Family and Kai's half-brother. "I'm really sorry about Skye. Is she with you now? Let me know when it's convenient, and I'll treat her to dinner to apologize."
"There's no need to." Warren pinched the space between his brows and leaned back in his chair. He lazily said, "She's even fiercer now than two years ago. Given your relationship with me, don't provoke her, or you might get bitten."
"That bite mark on your hand is hers?" Kai gloated. "Congratulations, you finally got rid of an obsessive pursuer."
Skye used to be submissive in front of Warren, and it was rare for her to raise her voice at him. Now, she had bitten him so hard that he bled, which showed that she had truly moved on.
The word "congratulations" sounded a bit unpleasant, and Warren's expression became grim. "I've told her a long time ago not to pursue me if there's no chance of success. She brought this upon herself!"
Kai rested his chin on his hand and smiled playfully. "Warren, do you know what you're like to Skye?"
Warren furrowed his brow, puzzled.
Kai casually remarked, "A hater. The kind who turns from a fan to a hater and expresses anger after realizing that their idol is not what they imagined."
Warren couldn't be bothered to respond. "I don't understand what you're talking about."
Kai rolled his eyes and replied, "Oh, come on, why are you pretending in front of me? Who was it in middle school that would skip PE classes and go to the dance studio to watch Skye dance?"
