CHAPTER 2 Her Morality

She covered her eyes and ears. Her forehead bumped onto the floor. Snot and tears oozed out uncontrollably. It felt like something was chasing her from behind. She couldn't bear it at last and began to strike the door. 'Let me out. I don't want to be here. Let me out!" She roared. 'Enjoy yourself in there. It's a rare chance for you." He smashed her hope without hesitation. Hearing Stephanie striking the door relentlessly, Jack's expression only got colder. Her suffering, however, didn't relieve but even worsen his agitation. The cell phone on the table rang. Jack picked it up. It was Liz Jose, so he answered at once. Her voice was seductive, but Jack interrupted her grumble, 'What do you want?" 'I feel bad. Can you come now?" The voice was weak, as if its owner was really sick. Jack raised his lips' corners and looked back to the door that was still making sounds, which agitated him once more. Liz called just at the right time, he thought. Jack only casted a quick glance at Stephanie's room before he agreed. 'I will be waiting for you!" There was suppressed joy in Liz's response. Even Stephanie herself didn't know how long she had been striking the door. When she couldn't hear a thing from outside, she had become senseless. She leaned on the door with her arms dangling weakly. She looked aside numbly, as if she had given in. The room was back to silence again. Only the shadows of branches outside moved now and then. One would always be susceptible to loneliness under such condition. She shut her eyes and had a long dream. In the dream, Steve was carrying a baby. A baby covered in blood. Just like Jack said. She owed him a life. That's why he came to revenge. She didn't want to argue any more. Speechlessly, she stared at them walking towards her. She began to smile too. Jack looked at the woman in silk dress before him and asked her in a cold voice, 'You are sick, in this way?" Liz wasn't embarrassed at all. She pulled herself close and answered shyly, 'I missed you, and I needed a reason. That's what I did." Before he could clear up his mood, Liz continued with a dry laugh, 'I am sorry. I really miss you. I promise this will not happen again." Jack gave her a glance and walked into the room. Seeing this, Liz followed cheerfully. They had sex. He looked at the person under him, but couldn't help comparing her face to that woman. For several times her face flashed in his mind. Jack got out of the bed, smoking in sulk. Liz knew something was wrong with him. She pulled the quilt over and wrapped it around her body. She looked at his back, couldn't hold her curiosity and asked, 'What's wrong?" He didn't answer. 'Are you missing her?" Liz felt wronged. Jack acted like she got him good. He turned around and gave her a frosty glare, which scared Liz. 'Actually, I didn't know if I should tell you." She hesitated, bit her lips and looked at him. Having noticed that he was upset, she softened her tone and continued. 'In the past, when they were dating, I saw her on another man's car." Jack's look suddenly changed. The temperature in the room at once dropped to a freezing point. Liz corrected herself, 'Perhaps they were just friends. Maybe I was thinking too much. She was not welcomed in her school. Few people…" 'Really?" He gnashed his teeth, picturing the scenes she described in his mind. He cared about Stephanie so much but he didn't realize it. Nonetheless, Liz was quite clear about it. She just tried to test Jack, but he took it seriously. She didn't know if she shall feel happy or not. He picked up the clothes on the floor and walked directly towards the door. 'I will sleep in the guest's room." He spoke in a deep voice. The door was shut. Liz looked at it at a loss. He didn't sleep for a whole night. He waited for the twilight so he could go back. The temperature inside the room was not much higher than outside. The food on the table had spoiled and turned to ugly grey. He couldn't wait to see what she was like now. When he opened the door, a sense of coolness hit him right in his face. Stephanie huddled in a corner, sleeping. Her body was cold, like a corpse that had been dead for a long time. Jack squatted down and nudged her a bit. She fell to the ground without any guard, her face was abnormally red. The heat made him frown. He took her up and jogged back to his room. Carrying her was like carrying a pile of weightless machine parts. No heat but only cold, hard skeleton. She was so light in his arms, as if she would break into pieces if he dropped her on the floor. The family doctor came. After knowing what had happened, he went to check the patient immediately and soon concluded that it was just a normal fever. 'How is she?" Jack somehow had come behind and asked in indifference. The doctor shivered before he turned around to tell him her condition. 'Hurry up and cure her." He felt a bit agitated. Looking at the person on the bed, he couldn't tell if it was guilty or distaste.
